Re: [haflingerfriends] Humane treatment of all animals

This is not directed specifically to Karen's post..... but one thing I try to do when evaluating the statements on BOTH SIDES is to try to find out who is behind the organizations putting out the message. Most have anonymous titles that sound neutral, but all have members who are pushing their own agenda for their own reasons. Before you take a side, make sure you know who's side your on. I think the truth is always some where in the middle.

Personally, I'm not opposed to controlling the wild horse population if (1.) It is done humanely and (2.) It is done to protect and maintain the viability of healthy herds, and not just to make the public lands available for ranchers to graze cattle and profit from it.
I also question whether grazing cattle instead of horses is any less destructive to the environment? Is it?

We should join and support the groups who are trying to get humane treatment of all animals, especially when connected to slaughter houses. Think of the cute little calves, aren't they as important as foals?
To solve the problem, there are just 2 answers. Put less horses on the ground, and provide for humane slaughter for the unwanted.
I recall a rescue horse organization somewhere in California that was trying to organize a euthanization clinic, or something like that. There are usually places like lion and tiger farms who would pick up the carcasses for meat, if not, in some places burial is an option. There has to be humane ways to take care of the unwanted horses that are already here. And as a mare owner, my responsibility is not to breed my 2 mares, regardless.
