As terrific as it has been finally riding Charlie, and having wonderful lessons on him, I still had one hurdle yet to clear. I had still been having someone stand by Charlie when I mounted and putting pressure on the opposite stirrup because I was afraid the saddle would slip. The trainer tried to work me through it last week and I just wasn't ready. Well, today I decided it was time to "cowboy up" and just do it. He had suggested that a breast collar may help so I dug it out and put it on Charlie when I tacked up. I use a mounting block because he's a big tall boy (15.2 hands! and yes, a registered Haffie.) He stood like a statue and I was up in no time. The saddle didn't budge. I don't know if the breast collar really helped, or if it was in my mind. A friend of mine was riding her sweet little Arabian and we had a wonderful time. Something interesting though.....Charlie was acting tired and I could tell he was ready to quit. When I prepared to dismount he nickered! It startled me and I didn't dismount.....and when I again prepared to dismount he nickered again! I guess he was telling me that he was happy to unload me?! My DH tried to get a good picture of me sitting on him. If they are decent I'll post one.
