Hi Everyone,
My name is Julie, I'm 48 and just became a proud haflinger owner in Jan. My little guy's name is Chip and so far he has just been the bomb! I am having so much fun with him. So far he has been everything that I imagined
a haflinger would be. Today we are going out trailriding. He is such a joy on the trails. Nothing like my spooky quarab. Nothing seems to faze him. Well gotta run and get ready to go to the barn. Talk to everyone soon.

[haflingerfriends] Re: Bad behavior on the list

OH WOW!

I have to admit that I was probably part of the 'bad behavior' lately and I've publicly and privately apologized and still am sincerely sorry, but wow... that is horrible that someone is posting our messages.

I'm sorry Emily that you are having to deal with this. I hope it gets resolved quickly.

Haflinger Horse blog

Brad,

you need to stop the public blog on blogspot that is feeding the list posts and posting ads for your private benefit.

This is a private list, the messages are private and you are violating the rules of the list, as well as the rules of blogspot.

Please shut down the public blog or you will be banned from this list.

[haflingerfriends] Re: Bad behavior on the list

OMG!! It is a shame that someone would do that. I for one want to say that I appreciate you and this list and I hope you do not get discouraged and shut the list down. I have learned so much from everyone on the list about Haflingers since I first purchased Allie a few years ago.

Thank you Emily for all you do for us.

It is rare that I feel our list is truly violated and have had to ban few people over the years. Yes, we have our disagreements and don't see eye to eye, and yes, things have gotten unpleasant on a number of occasions.

But two things have happened that really make me angry.

I've had to ban someone from the list who was assuming more than one identity on the list, using different names and emails. I know I can't prevent this from happening since people on the internet can assume any identity they want (and I know it has happened before) but when it is done specifically and intentionally to stir up foment on the list, I draw the line.

There is also someone on this list who is sending every post on this list to a public blog, without my permission, and without the permission of all of you who post on the list. It is a running feed to the blog, so the minute this message appears on this list, it appears real time on that blog. The point of the blog (I think) is to earn the blog owner money by placing Google ads on the blog for people to click, which results in money to the blog owner.

The blog has no identifying information about the blog owner and it certainly does not have my blessing. I have made a formal complaint reporting abuse to the web service hosting the blog, and I will share the address privately with any of you if you wish to report abuse as well as a violation of our privacy.

The person on this list who started this blog needs to close it down immediately. I don't care who you are as long as you stop it now. I care a great deal who you are if you don't.

Now let's keep things more civilized on this list, respect each other's diversity, and respect the rules of the list and respect each other's privacy.

[haflingerfriends] Re: The best feeling

Hi Denny,

I completely understand the feeling. Sometimes I STILL feel that trepidation right before mounting. I (more often than NOT) get on anyway - and each time I do it builds my confidence more and more.

I'm almost 50 and have had my fair share of spills and close calls and tonight - for the first time in YEARS cantered around and around and around and around the arena ( I take lessons outside of riding my own horse) and when I FINALLY stopped I raised both hands over my head and yelled YYYEEEESSSS.... : D

Now I don't do that on MY horse (Yet) - walk / trot for now - but each time it's a little longer and a little stronger - and boy what that does for the rest of my life OUTSIDE of that is simply amazing!

You go girl!

[haflingerfriends] Re: lonely haffie (?)

Thank you all for your input - very much appreciated! We are hoping - AFTER the grass comes in a little AND after we're done (?) feeding hay to be able to put Cindy in with two 2 year old geldings. She will stick her face in the manger and not come up for air so we're waiting a while longer.

I have a feeling she will rule over them with an iron hoof but that's ok - one of them really needs to be taken down a peg or two...OR she will be taken down a peg herself (but I doubt it!)...

With regards to the buddy sour issue - I had a QH for 6 years who was violently buddy sour - main reason I ditched him. He was BIG and mean - SO UNLIKE my darling golden girl.

Well - I'll keep y'all posted on our progress...

Cheers from (FINALLY) warm KY

Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: The best feeling

I think the main trick with that sort of hackamore (or really any other) is to make sure the nose piece is sitting up on the bone rather than the cartilage. I don't know how useful they are if the horse doesn't neck rein though (I'm thinking a "plow" rein might dig the top part of the "T" into the side of a horse's face)

I remember this type of hackamore back in the day as well, looked a little less scary than the 7 or 8" shanks on the western ones. I'm not sure how humane they are, I think that there is a lot of potential to hurt a horse if you don't have them set up properly, or if you are rough with them, but that is the same with everything!

RE: [haflingerfriends] Saddle Maker in Ohio

There are two saddle makers on this site for Haflingers.

Good luck in your search.

priced western saddles for Haflingers. If anyone has that information or can
direct me to it, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

[haflingerfriends] Re: The best feeling

LOL, it doesn't take guts to ride in the snow, at least you get a soft landing if you need it. In fact I was most upset that Jim had cleared the snow in the roundpen, I just asked to clear a path TO it. I don't know the last time Alto was ridden, certainly not since he has been here, so I would have prefered more snow.

I should also learn a bit of trust, having not actually seen Alto under saddle, I had to trust Dawns say so that he would be fine, and it's hard for me to trust. Stupid really because everything Dawn has said about her horses is true, so I should of trusted her say so a while back.....sorry Dawn!!!

[haflingerfriends] Re: New member

Thanks for the welcome. Just got back from the trail ride and yes it is still quite snowy here. In some places the snow was still quite deep but we made it though. Chip and the other horses really wanted to go. When we finally let them go they flew like the wind. My Chip is quite the speed demon. He doesn't know the meaning of slow at the canter. That will be a project to work on. It was really neat outside with all the snow and so being so warm. It was almost unreal. Great day!

Hi Julie,
I'm also in NE Ohio, just outside Fairlawn/Akron and am new to Haflingers,  My girl Camryn came to us in Jan. as well.  Just to icy and slick here to even ride in the paddock.  What part of NE Ohio are you in?

His mares took that moment to decide to notice that their handsome man was missing and start to run around the paddock screamimg, Jim was suggesting postponing operations for a while, Me, with BGP hitched firmly in place went NO WAY, we are doing this now.

So on I popped, and Alto, like the star he is, kind of looked around and went "what are you doing up there?" so we sat for a minute and chatted, then we walked around for a while, did some turns, some flexes and some back ups, walked round a little more, then hopped off and called it a job well done.

I felt like a million dollars, got to build on that good start, but looking forward to doing more :) And what would a story be without photographic evidence.... ......... ..so here you are, just bear in mind that my face didn't seem to get the message about the million dollar feeling!

At the first Jumpernite he beat the second place person (a very good Jumper trainer on her personal horse) by 4 seconds which is a big deal in Jumpers as normally they are won by maximum one second or less. The second Jumpernite he also won his 3'3ft speed class, Pippin's time was 42 seconds the second place riders time was 46 seconds. He also competed at the Aspen Farms Event Derby (at Training level), the course was MAXED out with a few 3'6 fences and a couple of Prelim cross-country fences. It was run as a Power and Speed class, Pippin won the jump off against some very solid Training level horses none of which were ponies. The show also ran late and was outside so he ended up Jumping all this right as it got dark out so there is no video or pictures because nothing turned out. He also recently went to a Jumper show at Sandmar Farms and won the 3'6ft Jumper class there.

Hi Julie,
Welcome to Haflinger Friends! You can be assured that you have chosen the best breed of horse in the world. It sounds as though you have already discovered this in your new horse, Chip. Have a wonderful ride with your new boy and post photos and updates on him when you get a chance.
Cheers!

[haflingerfriends] Finding the right saddle

Hi

With all the questions about finding the right saddle, I thought I'd post the wonderful experience I just had with Dover.
I presently ride my Haflinger in an Isabell and it fits him nicely. However it doesn't fit me nicely. Really bothers my left hip. So I am on a mission to find the right fit for both of us. I called Dover to ask about possible saddles to fit my boy. As soon as they heard that I had a Haflinger, they said Oh, your in luck, out saddle fitter has a Haflinger. Her name is Michelle and she is wonderful. She has a lot of good suggestions on the phone and is sending me lists of saddle fitters in my area and directions for getting the info needed to find the right saddle for Mic. She couldn't have been nicer. I never felt rushed or like she had someone else she needed to tend to. She also shared great stories about her Haflinger. A lot of the stories sounded soooo familiar. So if you are looking for an English saddle, you might want to check out Dover. They also have a test ride plan. Good Luck to everyone looking for that perfect fit. :o) Tina in VA

Re: [haflingerfriends] New member

Hi, Julie,

I, too, am 48 and new the haflingers. Since last August. Now I have two. I'm pleased to see you live in Ohio and are still able to get out and trail ride. I understand it's still snowy there!

We only got out to ride this past weekend after what seems like forever. The weather's been cooperative. Spring is taking root. Things are drying out.

I'm 48 y/o, too.

Re: [haflingerfriends] The best feeling

That's fantastic. I can hardly imagine the guts it takes for all of you who live in the snow to get out there and ride. Bravo!

I see you use the same hackamore I used on my shetland pony thirty years ago. (Can it really have been that long?) Troubles (the pony) went along with it like he did everything else I put on him through. LOL I'm pleased to see the hackamore is still in demand. It strikes me as being very humane.

I felt like a million dollars, got to build on that good start, but looking forward to doing more :) And what would a story be without photographic evidence.... ......... ..so here you are, just bear in mind that my face didn't seem to get the message about the million dollar feeling!

The Frostbite Carriage Driving Show is celebrating its 10th year. Come
share our excitement on April 24th and 25th at The Carriage Barn Equestrian
Center in Newton, NH. The Arena Driving Trial will be on Saturday, the
24th; cones, obstacles, and dressage. Doors open at 8:30am, first
competitor in the ring at 9am. Spectators welcome!

Our judge for this year's Frostbite ADT is Shelly Temple. Ms. Temple has

career as a teenager she foxhunted, showed hunters, evented and competed at
FEI level in dressage, was the Show Manager of Dressage at Devon for several
years, and served as the President of the Delaware Valley Combined Training
Association. She is an ADS 'R' and an USEF 'R' judge, and a member of the
ADS Licensed Officials Committee and the USEF Driving Technical Committee.
Shelly has been USEF National Champion in the Combined Driving Single Pony
division and was a member of the Bronze Medal winning US Team for the 2007
World Pony Driving Championship. Individually, she was second in dressage,
with one of only two scores in the thirties at the competition. Shelly and
her Morgan, Cooper, also won the 2006 and 2007 USEF Horse of the Year awards
for Combined Driving Single Pony. After taking some time off from
competition, Shelly and Cooper were the 2009 USEF Reserve National Champions
in the Single Pony Division. Shelly enjoys working with drivers at all
skill and experience levels. Read more about Shelly at

[haflingerfriends] Re: Now here is a question

Certainly no flames from here Kiola, you are just stating in far stronger terms than I would use, my unease about the first ad, If they had said Haflinger TYPE, then I would have no issue, but to label her as a Haflinger, not so hot. Though I don't know if I would be as vehement as you are in calling them liars about everything. Looking at her I would say that there may be a Haflinger or two in her family tree, so maybe an exaggeration rather than a lie.

If I was looking for a family pony I would sure go look at her, she sounds like she could be a real sweetie.

The second mare, really just makes me sad, the owner wants to sell her and buy a well broke kids pony to use on their ranch, but all she has going for her at this stage is a set of papers, with no real strong names close up.

If nothing else it is another thing that has brought home the responsibility of working with your horses, if she had some ground work on her, if she was being sold as ready to back this spring and ride away, then she would be so much more attractive, as someone else said, at least you know that her bones will be fused.

IDK I just found the two ads really interesting to compare.

They are respectful and hard-working. They are descendants of Austrian mountain ponies and are solid and strong, hardy, easy keepers and long-lived. They excel at jumping and are great for driving."

It is my understanding that a con artist is someone who leads you to believe something that is not true, and looks to profit from that deception. Even a small "white lie" in my book by a seller is a no go. Because most likely that will not be the only mistruth you will discover... it is just the most glaringly obvious. When I buy a horse, I want the good, the bad, and the ugly - and truthfully!

[haflingerfriends] New member

Hi Everyone,
My name is Julie, I'm 48 and just became a proud haflinger owner in Jan. My little guy's name is Chip and so far he has just been the bomb! I am having so much fun with him. So far he has been everything that I imagined
a haflinger would be. Today we are going out trailriding. He is such a joy on the trails. Nothing like my spooky quarab. Nothing seems to faze him. Well gotta run and get ready to go to the barn. Talk to everyone soon.
