[haflingerfriends] Re: Pamona Equine Affaire

Hey Jennnifer. I'll be there from noon on Friday and stay Friday evening for the race, camera in hand. I'll try to do better than I did at the Equestfest as far as my photograpy skills, or lack thereof, go! See you soon.

[haflingerfriends] Re: Ringbone

She's had multiple owners, so I can't give a detailed history, but yes she was driven and yes at least some on the roads. I am not certain at what age she was started or how hard she was trained. Her confirmation is not ideal and that may be a contributing factor also. I had wanted her to be my "forever" horse, so I am devastated and have tried everything recommended. Right now she is sound for light work, so I am still riding her, but I hoped to be able to do a lot more.

I don't think it's the breed, I would think other conditions set a horse up for ringbone. Just my opinion.

Also this is my first Haflinger and I love her, but vet said Hafligners are prone to ringbone. Is this true? If I need to replace her I was thinking I would consider another Haflinger, but this is a concern.

[haflingerfriends] My clown McDon

Today was a really fun day riding the horses in the snow. The day was really cold but absolutely gorgeous. Ian (my son) and I were taking turns riding McDon, Scotia(my daughter) was riding her horse Cappachino. We'll I ask Ian to stop so I could take his picture on McDon. I said smile and this is what I got. I didn't know it until I uploaded the pictures(It was so sunny, I couldn't see the image in the camera). I think it is the funniest face Mic has ever made. He smiled all right, a big toothy grin. I have no doubt that he knew exactly what he was doing. What a ham. If you want to see the picture it is in the album McDon and Friends. Enjoy. TIna in VA

[haflingerfriends] Love the Pictures!

I always enjoy looking at any new photos that have been downloaded. Every picture shared is one more horse that is loved, cared for and has a job of some sort, even if it's just to bring joy to a human or another horse. There may be the occasional skirmish on this group, but what shines through the most is the caring and dedication all of us have for our horses. Lucky horses. It's too bad that so many horses don't have it so good.

Well Steve

My haffie Atlantis uses a 6" to 6 1/2" bit. I knew the 5-5 1/2" one was looking funny and not fitting properly so I got out a string and measured his mouth. One of my friends told me I was crazy that there was no way he would use that big a bit. LOL But the measurements don't lie. I don't think he is big headed. I think there is a head picture under the photo album Atlantis EHF and Dusty.
As for boots I am not sure exactly what size he would wear-when I last measured his hooves one was 4 3/4 x 4 3/4 and the other front hoof was 5 x 4 1/2. Needless to say they need shaped up. So going by those off the wall measurements he would fit into an 00easyboot-a 3 Simpleboot.

Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: Haflinger characteristics/ bits & boots

My haflinger needs a 6" liverpool for driving and a 5 1/2" to 5 3/4" for
riding (snaffle). He needs a larger shoe than average, I pay 5.00 more than
the rest of the barn for shoeing.
He has an 8" cannon bone.

All 3 of my babies have different voices. Larissa being head mare has quite a variety of sounds. Meg has a lower voice which I think comes from her more drafty chest. Woden is still a choir boy most times but is lowering his voice at times. How can there be any trouble in the world when I walk down the stairs and say "HI Babies" and am greeted by 3 different voices. Even when I get there Larissa does lots of low and gentle vocalizations as I walk up and give her a kiss. When I am driving Woden alone he is calling out almost constantly..probably to see how far away the mares are as from one adjoining street they can call back. I love how vocal they are. Re: [haflingerfriends] Ringbone

yours is the first case I have heard of. Dressage is very hard on legs and
feet I would not ask a horse with ringbone (even a very mild case) to be
any more than a lite usage horse or pet. I am so sorry for you and yor mare.

[haflingerfriends] Ringbone

My wonderful little mare, age 11, was diagnosed with ringbone this past fall. I've had her less than 2 years and she was everything I wanted.

Had a full workup done. We've injected her joints which only lasted 5 weeks. Used bute, surpass, cosequin and corrective shoeing, which all helped minimally at best. The vet has not given her a very good prognosis for more than light work. She is only slighlty off, but I want to use her for dressage. So before I throw in the towel any other suggestions? Also this is my first Haflinger and I love her, but vet said Hafligners are prone to ringbone. Is this true? If I need to replace her I was thinking I would consider another Haflinger, but this is a concern.

[haflingerfriends] Re: Haflinger characteristics/ bits & boots

I was suprised to find that my 5 1/2" wide bits were too narrow for our Haflinger. To my eye, his head seems fairly refind for a draft type horse. There is even a hint of baby doll arab characteristics to his head. So I was shocked to find that little Pancho took a 6" wide bit.

I was also suprised to find that his feet take a #2 easy boot when I went to measure them. I would have guessed that his feet would have been larger in size.

Is this normal? What sizes do other folks here use in bits and boots?

[haflingerfriends] Re: Update on my journey with Charlie

Congrats to both of you! First of all, for getting a trainers help, and secondly, working through your issues. And, a huge good for you for finding a trainer willing to help you with your decision to keep your horse, finding someone else to ride until you have the confidence and skill, and for your trainer to continue to give you lessons, and work with the person riding your horse!
For you having the patience to work through everything, and not throwing it away or saying it is the horse's fault, but a combination of several things, and your willingness to look at them, work through them, seek professional help, and yet keep your own goals AND to do it safely, you are to be admired by all! Keep up the great work and dedication, everyone is cheering for you!

> Happy Saturday! I haven't given an update for quite awhile, so I thought I would let you know of our progress. I use the term "our" because Charlie and I are on a journey together, to meet in the middle, where we can finally become riding partners. A few weeks ago the trainer kindly had a heart to heart to talk with me and my DH about the future of me and Charlie. After working with Charlie for 60 days, and me on lessons with his horse for a couple of months his conclusion was that Charlie would make a wonderful horse for someone younger and much more experienced, but not for me. He was afraid that a tremdous spook from Charlie would send me flying again, where a younger rider would have a better chance of riding one out. I was devastated. I had sleepless nights, and lots of tears, had a tough time concentrating at work, etc. The trainer and the barn owner both offered to help me sell Charlie and find a confidence builder horse for me. (I can't afford two horses at this time.) I set my heels. Charlie's not going anywhere. He and I are bonded, and that's that. Just running my hands over his coat and smelling his horsey smell melts away any stress that I have, and I've never met a sweeter, kinder horse. Plan B. I went on a search for the perfect person to put some miles on Charlie for me. I found a sweet 19 year old college student, experienced rider, fearless, and in need of a horsey fix. I paid for her to have a session with Charlie and the trainer, and it went really well. She's been riding him in the arena about twice a week for the last few weeks. She puts in about two hours at a time, and Charlie is getting mellower and mellower under saddle. He's had nary a spook, even with dogs barking, tractors scooping gravel, and an air compressor with nail gun at work right next to the arena! He has a tremendous work ethic, and stays at a trot until he's asked to walk. He remembers all of his training, and collects, stops and backs very nicely. (The trainer is a pro-reiner.) I have worked really hard in my lessons, and the trainer is really happy and surprised at my progress. I'm trotting tightly around barrels, trotting down the rail and doing roll-backs, side-passing, and everything but loping. That's coming soon, as soon as he sees that I'm not showing any signs of the nervous hunching over the horn that I still do at odd times. He admitted the other day that if I continue in the same manner, and Charlie gets lots of miles on him with his new rider, that he thinks Charlie and I will be suitable to partner up in a few months! I gave him my word that I wouldn't hop on Charlie until he's certain that it will go well, because we both know that if my confidence is broken again, that would probably be the end of my riding dreams. Meanwhile, in between lessons on the reiner's wonderful horse, I've been riding a mare who's owners gave her up to the barn owner because they could no longer afford board. She's grumpy and lazy, and makes me work to get her to work, but it's good practice. I'll update again later.

[haflingerfriends] Re: Tried the Kimberwicke Bit

Judy,
I do agree that a horse should be always be trained to bend at the poll (vertical flextion) and not forced with a curb bit.

I may not have explained myself very well. By weight on the bit I am talking about only a couple ounces to adjust the balance of the Kimberwick bit. Whatever a doubled over 4" strip of leather would weigh. Not even as much as the steel shanks on a normal curb bit.

Any type of bit is a "device with weight". Adjusting the weight only helps the horse to understand our attempts to comunicate with him through the bit.

The only other alternitives is to use a side pull, a bosal, or leave them in rope halter. And I'm fine with anyone using any of those for comunication.

The one fault to a Kimberwick is that the balance of it in a horses mouth is terrible. That is if it is to be used one handed for neck reining. If you are using it two handed then the balance doesn't matter as you can use a Kimberwick bit to direct rein and to cue vertical flexion two handed. The leather "shanks" are just to improve that balance.

A well balanced curb bit requires a horse to bend at the poll automatically. That is the primary purpose of a solid mouth, ported, curb bit. When a horse is bent at the poll he is obedient and attentive to your lightest cues. That is why a horse neck reins so much better in a well balanced ported curb bit than in a snaffle bit, or any other type broken mouthed (jointed) bit.

Often folks use a curb bit for "more control". That is not what a curb bit is for and using one for that reason is usually going to get them into a wreck somewhere down the trail.

The secondary use of a ported curb bit is to "check" them to recapture their attention if it drifts, and/or half-halt them for basically the same reason. Thirdly it can be lightly used one handed, to cue a stop. A curb bit should never be used to ask for a backup.

When using a curb bit most stopping, all turning, backing, and lateral movement should be cued with your seat, legs, and/or reins laid lightly against the neck. A curb bit should never be used for direct or indirect reining.

It is not fair to a horse to put him into a curb bit without first teaching them to lateraly or vertically flex in a snaffle. A horse should always be trained in a snaffle to bend vertically before it should ever be expected to carry a ported curb bit.

Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: Haflinger characteristics

I can't resisting asking this though I apologize beforehand: Do you know why your shetland/mini has such a deep voice?

It's because she's a little hoarse.

LOL... I just have to reply to this one.
Yes, my Haflingers do have deeper "voices", but the pony I have who has the deepest throatiest voice is my very mellow 10 hand shetland/mini pony mare. If one were to hear her without seeing, she sounds as if she is a great big draft. Low and rumbling...
Our Haflinger gelding can get the highest note if he squeals and is displeased when participating in pasture play that does not go his way. He sounds like a girlie-mare. .. and not even like my Haflinger mare. Nightingale does not hit the high notes like he does.
I don't know what determines a voice... our very high strung Hackney pony Miss Patsy had a really high pitched whinny.

More snow in Virginia today. We got about a foot of the beautiful white stuff. I put some pictures under McDon and Friends album of McDon and Cappy in the snow today. ALso some pictures from about a week and a half ago of Ian and Scotia riding down the road. Ian is 14 and 6'2. McDon is 14.2. Enjoy. Tina in VA

[haflingerfriends] Re: Pamona Equine Affaire

Hey Vickie,

Thanks. I don't think it will be televised, it wasn't last year. But I have my sister ready to video it for me. I will put it on you tube and post it on here for everyone to see.
