Couple things that usually show, the flesh around the hip and tail areas becomes softer or flabbier as time gets close. The mare should develop an udder, normally starting about 1 month prior to foaling, but some don't until the foal is coming. Many of my mares would have a "drop" in the stomach and flank area about 2 days before foaling, the baby moves into a different position. The mare looks noticably different. Some mares will start dripping milk just before the foal is born. I had one broodmare start dripping 10 days before she foaled. They do tend to get more animated the day of foaling, milling around, shifting positions more often etc.
I used to sleep in a chair and set an alarm for every 1/2 hour and still missed lots of births, or I'd stay up til 6AM and finally give up, go out at 7:30 and there'd be a little face looking up at me, shezzzzz!
Anyway, good luck and have fun, I LOVE the babies and miss not having any.
