[haflingerfriends] Lovely January 2010 Homepage photo

I really love the Haflinger friends Homepage. Marjorie and her gelding Mariko look fabulous. The detail in her costume was hard to see on the tv when I watched the Equestfest. That is some very intricate lace, and Mariko's bridle is gorgeous.
I am looking forward to watching them tomorrow with the rest of the Western Haflinger Association Haflingers in the Rose Bowl parade. The group is number #12 in the line up. Don't miss it!!

RE: [haflingerfriends] Re: Ebay listing - Cashel SoftSaddle

Hi Denny,

Actually I am a dealer for Cashel and we've been selling the Cashel
SoftSaddle for about 4 years now and have sold quite a few. I have tried
them on many different horse conformations and since they conform to the
horse (and rider) they fit pretty well. They will slip on those round, no
withered horses easily though, so I always recommend using the SoftSaddle
Pad with them. They give you a little more support than a bareback pad but
if asked if they are more like a saddle or a bareback pad - I would
definitely say they are more like a bareback pad. You can feel your horse
very well underneath you. For the rider, they are very comfortable also.
They provide just a little more support and formed seat than a bareback pad.

Yes, you can take the stirrups off of these or use a pair of English
stirrups, which a lot of my customers do.

If a person is enjoying riding bareback I would think they would like the
SoftSaddle also. It's the people who think that they will feel like a
saddle that tend not to be happy with them. I used to use one all of the
time on my arab but since I've lost him and am riding a younger guy (my
Haflinger) I don't feel as secure and have went back to a rigid tree saddle.
My best girlfriend however, uses hers to trail ride, endurance riding & even
jumps with hers. It's definitely a personal like or dislike.

I know nothing about these saddles, do they fit all horses? I've just
started riding a little bareback, and someone suggested that a bareback pad
would be a good investment. If you take the stirrups off of the Cashel, is
it like a bareback pad...LOL can you post to Canada?

This might be too far out of the way for you, but I know someone who went to a

I love where I live because I'm a New Hampshire native - this area is rural,
has the mountains I grew up among, four beautiful seasons!

Here's a property I wouldn't mind having if I didn't already have one:

My friend built it - the house is nice and the barn is probably every horse
owner's dream barn. The photos don't do it justice.

[haflingerfriends] WEEKEND RIDING VACATION BETWEEN MICHIGAN AND WASHINGTON, DC

My friends and I are looking for a place for a weekend of guided riding and
maybe camping with horses all inclusive. We do not want to haul our own
horses just because of the logistics and stress on them. We found a great
place last year in Wellsboro, PA, even though we had a wonderful time and
recommend it highly, we do want to try someplace different. They live near
Detroit, Michigan and we live near Washington, DC so we are looking for
someplace that will be about the same travel distance slightly plus or minus
for each of us.

I know this is a tall order, but it would be greatly appreciated it anyone
has any leads. Ideally the riding facilities is located in a lovely riding
area, that will take people out for a trail ride, camp overnight with
everything provided, horses, tents, camping equipment, hot meals, etc.
Websites, phone numbers, and if you have had experience a short synopsis
would be a huge help, why you liked it, etc.

Thank you so much for your help ahead of time.

RE: [haflingerfriends] Re: Cart Question....

Hi Alana... all I was going by was a cart I found made specifically for Haflingers....and it had 74 inch shafts, that's all I knew .....

Would somebody tell me what a "cob" type is?

I thought so too. I am no expert, but i have been looking to buy a cart, and all carts recomended for a cob type horse (i tell the company i have a 14.1 hand haflinger) says to go with 74 inch shafts. I have also been concerned with the shafts being wide enough apart.

I have found the charts that Kathy quoted to be a guideline at best. I have noticed it to be on the stingy side when it comes to measurements. For example, the 30 inch singletree would be leaving trace rubs on those chunky haflinger sides. Your horse would not be a happy camper. I also would like to note that the shafts for my 10 hand pony are 67 inches long. Surely he his shorter than 3 inches less than your 14 hand horse. I use 70 inch shafts for my 12 H pony and 80 in shafts for my full size horses, including my 13.3 H haflinger. I do like to give them a little room to trot out and if the horse might be prone to kicking, I like to make sure that he can not reach the cart with those hooves. As for shaft width, I have had to widen some of mine to accommodate a haflinger belly. The point being, use these charts only as guidelines and take actual measurements from your horse.

Thanks Vicki.... nice to know I don't have to be obsessive about the

[haflingerfriends] Re: Bucking Haflinger

That entire thing describing you and Calvin sounds like Cookie and me. Everything, incl. the little whack, & being afraid to whack coz they get *offended* - the whole thing.

I took the chicken's way out - I never canter Cookie anymore . I must be doing things wrong because she is very well trained and didn't do this before I bought her. Whatever. I'm afraid now, so I just do everything I want except canter. If I want to canter, I ride Rose, my TWH mare. She has a wonderful canter, never bucks, and I'm not afraid.

Now, if I am balanced and asking Rose properly, why wouldn't I be the same with Cookie? Maybe Rose has just lowered her expectations of me and Cookie refuses to? ROTFL! I think that must be it!

((((((Sue))))))
Best wishes when you begin riding again!

[haflingerfriends] saddle photos

I hopefully just posted photos of the Ortho-Flex saddle in the photo section. The album is called santiamsaddles

I know it's going to solve someone's saddle quest headache.
It's a unique, extra wide, extra short, round skirted custom build. It's a 16 seat (measures 17 from inside cantle to base of horn but 16 to inside pommel). The seat is black suede and has extra padding. The panels are just under 24 inches long, they seem to be wider set then a normal OF. Yet the tree still supports full rigging with the dropped fork front cinch and rings for a back cinch,(also has crupper ring, breast collar rings, footmans loops on the back of the cantle).
The gullet is nine inches at the narrowest part but the important measuremeant is between the pivot points of the flex system it's 13 inches. The most popular model of Ortho-Flex trail saddle is the Caliente. They are my favorite and I have three. It's considered a fairly wide gullet but that measurement is 8.5 on the widest one I have. I've had Brazo models, Baron models, Traditionals, Patriots, Trail Pardners, Premiers, Express Lites and a bunch of other Ortho-Flex models and have never come across one like this. I had a system six Caliente (extra short, extra wide) and this is wider. It's not cheap at $2000.00 but it's as close to mint as you can get in a used saddle. I happen to think its rather pretty too.

Beautiful job Jen! I drove up from SD to see ya'll and was so glad I did! Yes that macrame mane is gorgeous. I was probably one of the people distracting you unaware that you were to be interviewed. They were quite enamored with the girl laying on top of Rosie ! Soooo cute! Hope to come to Norco to visit someday. My Haffie is from Corona, but I don't know where. I was talking to Roland about her, but he doesn't recall her.
My father is a horseman from Austria. Actually from Tyrolean area. I feel so blessed to carry on by supporting the Austrian heritage via the Haflinger!
Job well done!!! Good luck tommorrow! With the jets going over, as the say, 'HOLD YOUR HORSES!'

And, yes, that was me driving the Rose Queen and the Court with my gelding and my husbands gelding (mine is the one with the insanely long hair!) That was the highlight of our day!! It was such an honor. I watched the broadcast last night.. and it was funny with all the "Haflinger pony" comments.. At least we got the "horses" into the spotlight for the world to see. They looked great in the presentation, although they showed mostly the driving horses and not the center horses with me on "Manny", Marjorie Puckett w/ Mariko and Jennifer Rose w/ "Native Rosie". But the fans liked seeing Rosie doing her tricks in the Grand Finale... and people wanted to touch or see Manny's macrame braid up close, which made me miss the live interview on RFD-TV... oh well. I was so excited I got distracted! We are bummed b/c it's raining.. I hope the boys aren't too dirty. I want to give them one last bath so the SHINE on parade day! We are #12... at 8:54 a.m. Our position was changed... we are right before the phantom jets fly over and perform the missing man formation! Yikes!! That will be LOUD at 9 a.m. Hopefully AFTER our camera moment on TV corner!! Wish us luck! Jen Wells and Roland Schmitz

Re: [haflingerfriends] Equestfest Photos

Thanks for posting those photos, Sue! I don't have RFD TV, and I was really interested in the Haflinger exposition. Wish I could have been there in person to have seen them!
Thanks, again!

Dear Haflingerfriends.
I posted the photos I took yesterday at the Equestfest. They aren't super great photos, but I thought you all might enjoy seeing them anyway. They are in the new photos section or I think you can look under sholland91 and see the album Equestfest 2009.
The photos are all out of order but I don't want to spend the time rearranging them. I'm sure you'll get the idea. The only person's name I remember is Jennifer with Native Rosie. I know Victoria too, but I decided not to put names on all the photos.
I didn't see anyone there with Haflingerfriends badges, but I was wearing my Western Haflinger Association shirt so I felt like I belonged :).
Enjoy - wish they were better.

Oh, and there was a Haflinger with the Shire horses that came out after the Haflingers so I took some shots of him/her, too, in his little white outfit.

Congratulation, Jessie!  I just ordered my copy.  I'm always looking for a good story with horses in it.  I can't wait to read it!

I'm both nervous & excited to be posting this. Last year I participated in a novel writing competition. Up until this point I have always started writing different books, but never finished one. Well I did finish the book I wrote for that competition and I had it published back in May. Unfortunately after a few errors were found, so it was put on hold, but the final revision is complete and its available again. You can find it here:

https://www. createspace. com/Customer/ EStore.do? id=3385787

Or you can find it by searching for Golden Dreams & Jessica Haviland on Amazon.com (the link in my signature should take you right to the amazon.com page for it).

So what is it about? Haflingers of course! Well...maybe not haflingers directly, but there are several in the book and they play a pretty important part. Its a romance/drama story about a lady who was in a horrible accident that changed her life and how she recovered from it. I hope you will check it out!

Thank you,
Jessie in KY with her two golden boys who are tired of being contained to the mud lot with all of this wet, icky weather.

[haflingerfriends] Re: The great horse property search

Merry Christmas Karen! I'm not sure if you'd be interested, but we
own property in Dutchess County in New York, about 15 miles from Connecticut, that we will be putting on the market in the spring.

We have 3.6 acres with a 4-bedroom 1830's farmhouse and a 3-stall barn. There is a deep pond in the pasture, and most of the land is fenced for the 2 haflingers we have. It is surrounded by several hundred acres of Nature Conservancy protected farm land and woods,
with possible access to trails right behind our pasture. This is
horse country, and just outside a very small town. Twenty miles
from either Kingston or Poughkeepsie.

We've done extensive remodeling on the house, and will be finishing that up this winter. We've just built a new house on 32 acres near Appomattox, and will be moving there in the spring.

I just thought I'd throw this out there as a possibility.
Good luck with your search.
Millie

So many disappointments here in Connecticut....either the property doesn't appraise or it sells overnight or it sits on wetlands or.....the list goes on and on and on. Can you all share why you love where you live with your horses and give us some ideas? We're willing to relocate as well, but would need to work.

Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: The great horse property search

I really dislike the new Vista program...it sends my posts before I ask it
to...ARGHHH!!! Anyway...I can answer any question you might have about
lending by either emailing me at _bking@envoymtg.com_
(mailto:bking@envoymtg.com) or calling toll-free at 877-368-6966 X110. The government has stopped
(as of yesterday) buying mortgage backed securities and this is what has
brought our interest rates so low in the recent year. However, interest
rates might (and most likely will) pop back up to the 6% range from the
current 5% soon. So, it truly is a buyer's market in financing as well. Also,
the government is still giving away money to first time home-buyers as well
as current homebuyers who are buying a new home and have owned a home in
the recent years. You can find out more info on this "free money" at
_www.irs.gov_ (http://www.irs.gov) and look under Tax Benefits of the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Hope this helps!

For those of you on Facebook, I also have a site there under Barbara King

time, and hub got his suit dirty. Memories!

If you go to an area because of the area itself and not a property, you
can choose any good realtor. When going for a particular property, *I* would
not use the realtor who has the listing. It's bound to be a conflict of
interest for that person. They can only represent the buyer or seller 100%, so
you can assume they'll represent the seller better. Get someone not
associated with that property, IMHO.

You can always ask about a lease/option. In this buyer's market, anything
is possible - esp. if the property has sat vacant for a while.

Wow, Jessie, I am SO impressed with your achievement! I'm a wanna-be writer but I've never had the self-discipline it takes to actually get a book written and published. Kudos to you!! I added your book to my Amazon 'wish list' for my next book order. Oh, and I love the description of the author and her two 'sassy Haflingers.' :-)

Congratulations!!

Thanks for sharing Jennifer! You all rock. Sorry about your nerves, but your Rosie is a smart cookie. The photo's look great and I can't wait to see the parade. I have 3 grandkids that have spent the last 3 days with us, 2 more days to go, so I haven't been able to post you haflinger friends lately. Enjoy the Zoo today, and think of tomorrow's parade as another Pioneer Day or Templeton 4th Parade. I'm so happy for you all following and doing one of your dreams!

This is only my second time other than the Cowboy race where I was in front of such a large group so I was so nervous and Rosie picked that up so it was a lot of my fault. oh well. I've never been good with being in front of people but it will only get better the more I do it. I was glad though that I got to lay her down and roll over during the finale so she could be used to paying attention to me when there is some activity going on. I know she would have done it better if I wasn't so nervous. This attention is still very new to me. lol

[haflingerfriends] Bucking Haflinger

I'm starting to feel a little better after my accident on Christmas Day, and I'm going to start riding again, or at least get on, today. As most of you know, Calvin bucked me off out on trail on Christmas Day. He was happy and energetic and threw a big buck while getting ready to canter up a hill. I'm wondering what your suggestions are for correcting a bucking horse. I know about saddle fit and all of that, believe me. I've had 14 saddles for Calvin in the 5 years I've owned him. I do believe that the saddle I use most of the time, which is a County Eventer (all purpose) fits him very well. He also gets monthly chiropractic treatments and of course, recently got 2 shots of Legend over the course of 3 weeks, and is feeling a little too good for my taste these days. But he does buck in the arena when I ask for a canter, or rather, he bucks when I ask for a canter and he doesn't listen and then I smack him with the crop, then he bucks, but then I smack him again (not hard, actually, not hard enough according to my trainer), then he bucks, but eventually he does it. But I am always afraid to hit him because I know he's going to buck. We have been having these fights since I got him, and I know it's me and my energy and fear, too, that's causing him to not go directly into a canter when I ask in the arena. If my trainer or someone else gets on him and asks for a canter, he does it without a problem. He also goes into a canter on trail w/o a problem, except for the other day of course when he got too happy and bucked, but that has never happened before. It could be a balance issue, I don't know. I think it's behavioural as he can be a real brat sometimes, although most of the time he's lovely.
Thanks for your help!

[haflingerfriends] Re: Cart Question....

Alana, Cookie is 14.2hh and I was told 74" shafts also, which happens to be her blanket size. The cart shop asked me her blanket size right off the bat when sizing.

Rose takes a 78 blanket. We split the difference down the middle and had our shafts made 76".

They'll ask you to measure across the chest - but the shaftmakers really know the proportions of horse breeds and have that pretty much figured out when you tell them the breed you have. I can assure you, when you see the narrowest part of the shafts, you'll think they couldn't possibly be wide enough apart to fit your horse in there! They do have to be pretty narrow so the horse can push them into turns.

[haflingerfriends] Re: The great horse property search

Karen, we relocated once when buying a home, but it was in the same state, 3 hrs. away. Honestly, it's probably all about the same.

We got a realtor in the city we decided on, she showed us lots of homes, and did all the legwork to get us our financing locally. She took care of everything, and all we had to do was drive there for the closing. In these days of faxing documents, it has become everyday practice to relocate people easily. Would have been easy if we hadn't had a flat on the way, costing time, and hub got his suit dirty. Memories!

If you go to an area because of the area itself and not a property, you can choose any good realtor. When going for a particular property, *I* would not use the realtor who has the listing. It's bound to be a conflict of interest for that person. They can only represent the buyer or seller 100%, so you can assume they'll represent the seller better. Get someone not associated with that property, IMHO.

You can always ask about a lease/option. In this buyer's market, anything is possible - esp. if the property has sat vacant for a while.

[haflingerfriends] haflingers in fiction

I'm both nervous & excited to be posting this. Last year I participated in a novel writing competition. Up until this point I have always started writing different books, but never finished one. Well I did finish the book I wrote for that competition and I had it published back in May. Unfortunately after a few errors were found, so it was put on hold, but the final revision is complete and its available again. You can find it here:

https://www.createspace.com/Customer/EStore.do?id=3385787

Or you can find it by searching for Golden Dreams & Jessica Haviland on Amazon.com (the link in my signature should take you right to the amazon.com page for it).

So what is it about? Haflingers of course! Well...maybe not haflingers directly, but there are several in the book and they play a pretty important part. Its a romance/drama story about a lady who was in a horrible accident that changed her life and how she recovered from it. I hope you will check it out!

Thank you,
Jessie in KY with her two golden boys who are tired of being contained to the mud lot with all of this wet, icky weather.

[haflingerfriends] Re: Equestfest

Hey Nancy

I wanted so badly to to show off Rosie's tricks but unfortuanlty she had a bad day. She wouldn't do anything I told her when they were filming but she did do all her tricks during the finale AFTER the filming so a lot of people did get to see it. This attention is still very new to me. lol

But it has surely been an adventure. :)

Hi folks, I've put my Cashel SoftSaddle on ebay starting at less than half price, if anyone has been in the market for one...very comfy ride, light and easy to clean. A good balanced seat is a must though!

[haflingerfriends] The great horse property search

Karen,

I will give you the name and e-mail of a friend who is in real estate; he's honest and he's a horse person so will be familiar with what you are looking for for property. Our state is beautiful; it ain't cheap....but then neither is CT. His name is Jim Sector, e-mail is jsector@together.net. I'm e-mailing him on this mail also so he will be familiar with the haflinger group e-mail address if you decide to contact him. He has ridden in various parts of our state so is familiar with good areas for horse properties with lots of trails and places to ride! If you are interested in coming up and just looking around, let me know! My phone is 802 425 3691.

Good luck!!!

Trina,
Yes, we're interested in checking out any area that appeals. Love Vermont as well. For those of you who have relocated, how difficult? We are unsure how to go about things. It seems impossible to buy and move at the same time so perhaps a rent with option to buy? I just don't know how often those come up in any area of the country. We definitely want our horses on the property with us as that is a very big part of our dream. Right now, we lease a barn and pastures. So we do all the work without them in our back yard. Bah humbug.
