[haflingerfriends] Re: Cart Question....

Shaft length and wheel size are important when buying a cart for a horse. The different *sizes* confuse me too, so I just go by the measurements in inches.

Cookie is 14.2 and Rose is 15.2. I had my cart custom built to fit both horses, and my shafts are 76" I believe. 72-74 sounds good for your horse to me. What is his blanket size?

Wheels are important and if they're wooden spoke wheels, it's easier to guess proper size than if it's a bike tire cart. I think 42" sounds good for your horse. Mine are 44 or 46 because I was trying to fit 2 different sized horses.

Yes, wooden wheels are easy to find. It sounds to me as if the hubs are standard size and you'll order the diameter you need. Bike wheels are out of my realm, so I'll let someone else go there.

Anyway, I am new to driving but have been researching for 2 years. I suggest you search and find a carriage shop and just ask the experts what length shafts and diam. wheels your horse requires. Be prepared with the measurement of blanket size. Cookie's blanket size turned out to be her perfect shaft size - but I had to go longer because the other horse is larger. They may want the measurement across his chest. Be prepared when you see the carts, the shaft ends always look a LOT narrower than your horse does to you. The mfgrs. have the proportions down well though.

Please ask an expert at a carriage shop before buying a cart so you don't bring it home just to find out it's the wrong size. All these measurements are importrant to the balance of the cart when put to your horse.

Have fun! Hope you find something great! At least one sounds sized well.
