RE: [haflingerfriends] The great horse property search - another long report

Karen,

I'll let this Website speak for Michigan.

http://www.michigan.org/Default.aspx

I've lived here all my life and have never thought about leaving.

The good, the bad, and the ugly -

Property is very cheap right now. If you want to get an idea, check out the
ads in this magazine - http://www.saddleupmag.com/

Unemployment is the highest in the nation - but that is due to how much we
are tied into the automotive industry. The people I know in other industries
are working - there are good medical opportunities are here. My son just
told me yesterday that technology positions (IT and programming) are opening
up as well.

I live in Oakland County which is near Detroit - people shy away from
Detroit - I don't - but I know the good areas and where not to go - but
that's like anywhere else in my opinion. I went to a convention once in I
think Cincinnati (but it could have been a bigger metropolitan city some
where else in that vicinity) and the first thing we were told at breakfast
was NOT to walk more than two blocks from the convention center. That upset
me - when I went to San Francisco for a convention - we walked all over!

Horses - our county is probably in the top five across the country for
horses per capita. In my location I have four trails to choose from - two of
which I could ride my horse to if I wanted. Two are in state parks and two
are in county parks. Although our trails have come under fire - we have a
very strong trail riding community and they do have an impact on keeping the
trails open. The Michigan Horse Council is very strong as well.

In spite of the economy, our riding program showed a 30%+ increase in
revenue over last year.
