Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: The great horse property search

Hi Karen,

My name is Sharon Gates and I live in Northeast Ohio, 12 miles from Lake Erie. We do have our share of snow but the worst is in the snow belt close to PA. I keep my horse at a Metroparks Stable where there are many, many trails to ride. We have a lot of people who keep their horses on their property but bring their horses to the trails to ride. I too would like to own property in the Columbus area where two of my children live. My husband plans to retire in 2010 and we would probably wait until the housing market gets a little better to move. I know Marysville is farm country and is centrally located. It is Northwest of Columbus. The hospitals are great in the Columbus area and you are 2 hrs. away from the Cleveland Clinic. There are so many great Haflinger friends in Ohio. They drive and ride english and western. Many of them post on the Haflinger website. I hope you get your dream farm soon. Good luck in your search. If you want to contact me, I'm at gatorfamil@aol.com.

Karen,

Just a thought, since you don't seem to be getting many responses that are containing the "why I like to live here" element: I'll put in a plug for Central Ohio! I love it here. I've been here, born and raised, all my life. The weather is: Ohio, if you don't like it, stick around, it'll change tomorrow. There are several big hospitals in the area for you. There is nothing "remote" here. My husband always says you CAN'T get lost in Ohio! But it's farm country, so you can easily find peace and quiet, and LOTS of beautiful nature. There are lots of trails within a very reasonable distance. Drive an hour or two south and you'll find hill country if you want more of a challenge (granted, they are not MOUNTAINS, but they're big and beautiful, nonetheless!) Licking County is HORSE COUNTRY. I have a friend who is currently living on a horse farm there (twenty minutes from me) for free in exchange for caring for the horses and she has five of her own there, too! So that happens here. Amish country is just up the road. It's not too far from PA and your daughter. Also nothing in nature that can kill you around here: bears, wolves, mountain lions, snakes, sharks etc. The land around here seems to be reasonably priced as well, maybe not the cheapest, but certainly not like the east!

There are several of us on this list from here, maybe they'll chime in?? I know that Ohio gets a bad rap for it's cold, gray rainy winters and the humidity in the summer, but it also has some REALLY spectacular springs and falls. This past year has been INCREDIBLE!! It never got really hot this summer and the fall lasted until the beginning of December. Right now there's snow, which it seems we don't get all that much of in the winter, maybe one or two good snowfalls, just enough to get the snow fix. If you go further to the north, there's more snow if that's what you like.

Sorry to be so long-winded. I just wanted to share my thoughts on Ohio, it's worth considering!

Hey Wendy,
We are looking for anywhere from 5 acres on up, even less if we find well planned acreage. We are not fussy. Just so discouraged with our Connecticut search.

We are willing to do almost any sort of work. I work in a hospital intensive care unit as secretary and telemetry technician. (reading heart rhythms) I also write for magazines and would like to make that a bigger part of my daily life. Dave is in manufacturing, but also builds furniture/tack boxes as a part time endeavor. We'd even consider a caretaker type position so long as it came with a barn for the horses, housing, and health insurance.

We do not show, but are familiar with the horse show scene as my daughter who now lives in PA showed for years and still competes in the hunter/jumper shows. We are avid trail riders and would like to learn a little bit about dressage to help us and our ponies.

We are a bit tired of the hectic lifestyle here in Connecticut and discouraged with the lack of trails. We've been looking for a place for three years. One of our criteria was trail access and that has proven to be near to impossible to find. We just heard back from our bank: although our credit is great and we have the money to buy, the property we looked at is not appraising anywhere near what we agreed to pay. This is a common problem nowadays as appraisers are very cautious in their assessments. Understandably so, but as this is the tenth (?) property that has fallen through for reasons beyond our control, we thought perhaps the spirits are gently pushing us to make a bigger move. Perhaps its time we took a bigger risk and started anew.

Thanks so much,

Karen in Connecticut
