Re: [haflingerfriends] shop vacs & leaf blowers

They have a (well had since i changed barns) a stand alone horse vac. It was great. Two speeds and it worked really well after someone got the bright idea to clean the thing out.

I would brush my horse, vaccumm her, then sometimes if needed give her a bath if all else failed.

I got her used to the noise, which i think is just good in general for a horse, like you said Francine. I do know some horses do not like the vac, not because of the noise, but because it pulls cold air (more so when it is cold outside) against their skin. Some thinner skinned horses may not like that.

The shop vacs can be good because they can also be used for wet stuff, could be useful for drying a horse off after a bath. Never done it, but i could see it working.

I have not tried it, but i know some folks use a regular carpet cleaner (shampooer with the hand tool) on their horse. They sell them specifically for horses, but it is not much different. I have used one on my dog before. Not really to give her a bath, but she kept sticking her nose in my business while i was shampooing the rugs that i took the hand tool and stuck it on her, think she would run off, but instead she liked it and i was able to vaccuum the dog.

On a side note, my shop vac always builds up a strong static charge, so when i have to touch the vac itself after using it, i always get a nasty shock. Not fun. Husband just laughs at me, because i get all weird (sorta like Captian Jake Sparrow from Pirates of the carribean) when i need to touch it. I know a shock is coming, but i dont wanna touch it, but i have to to turn it off, move it etc..

Hi Gang, for what it's worth!!! I use a shop vac, and a small vac sometimes. I also use a leaf blower to blow the dust off, sometimes that works better. You do have to get your horse use to all the noise but it works great. Francine www.sugarcreekhaflingerfarm.com
