Well, I am so glad you agree and see what is happening!
Thank you for your voice in this matter ....
I called my friend who works at the sale barn and asked her if she knew
what the gelding sold for could she look up what happened to him, so she did,
and get this folks, he sold for only $35.00!
That is what it cost to put him in the sale so the owner got nothing for
this cute gelding cross bred haflinger/welsh. And to top it off they had to
drive three hours to get to the sale with him so add that into the cost of
selling or should I say giving him away ... Not to mention that they had to
have a health cert and coggins done as they were from Idaho and this sale was
in Wash.
Now to me that is insane ... This gelding had been fed right, was in good
health, had his feet trimmed had all his shots and they had the vet records
showing when he had been gelded and what vet clinic took care of him, etc.,
just to get this horse to this age and to care for him properly cost that
owner over $500.00 and that is all he brought at the sale was $35.00 ...
a family did end up buying him for their kids but there again that is a
mistake ... he is not a kids horses yet and won't be for several years.
So my friend said that he was the second lowest selling horse there. And
only one foundered pony brought less.
So my point is: please do not breed to try to produce any horse you cannot
keep for the horses entire life.
The times are changing we all see it,
there are too many horses already born, unless you are in a financial
position to afford to feed that horse for the next 25 years then don't breed.
I know some of you will delete this and say I am being too opinionated but
the facts are there in every mag. in every feed store in every ad for
horses there are so few buyers. And so many horses that need new homes. Do not
make the value of this Haflinger breed go down the tube by out-crossing, do
not raise a haflinger cross that is not going to be worth anything.
Own this breed with pride, be selective, so the haflinger is held in high
regard and wanted and cherished.
Peggy in eastern Wash.
