[haflingerfriends] Re: First 2010 Foal at Rivervalley is tragic...

Dawn, in response to your point about having them up in the mountain pastures,to grow and mature, I agree 100%. Young Max, my FjordxQH, who you met here, spent his 2nd winter out in out bush, with a couple of old mares, basicaly living rough, with us just checking in to make sure that everyone was OK.

Although I've been questioned about that a lot, I truly believe that it gave him far more than it cost him. He is sensible, sure footed, and brave. He grew tremendously, and it only took a couple of short weeks to get him back to where he was handling wise.

I strongly believe in giving horses the chance to be horses, live in a herd and rough it a little, think and do for themselves. If you have youngsters out with some olde ones they get great lessons on their manners as well.

I know it's not something that everyone would agree with, or want to do, or have the facilities to do, but I think it pays dividends.

Denny in Sask, going out to hug a certain Haflinger stallion, and have a chat with him!

However, I have seen many cripples in pens and overfed and under excercised, so what is better? The horses that make it are far better off I think. ....................................> Sincerely,
