Yesterday I watched a movie on HBO that you, and anyone interested in autism and/or the treatment of animals for slaughter, should see! Very timely for the slaughter issues today, despite the fact that it happened many years ago. The movie is "Temple Grandin". It's the true story of an autistic woman who managed to obtain a Masters, and I believe a PhD.... at a time when there was no treatment for autism and autistic children were institutionalized. She is now a college professor. Her passion was to campaign for better treatment of cattle, both on ranches and in slaughter houses. It amazed me what she managed to achieve! She designed humane systems for the handling of cattle. If her ideas had become mandatory we'd have a wholly different industry and no one would object to the slaughter houses remaining. Claire Danes stars as Temple and did an amazing job! I highly recommend the movie!

Subject: [haflingerfriends] Humane treatment of all animals
We should join and support the groups who are trying to get humane treatment of all animals, especially when connected to slaughter houses. Think of the cute little calves, aren't they as important as foals?
To solve the problem, there are just 2 answers. Put less horses on the ground, and provide for humane slaughter for the unwanted.
I recall a rescue horse organization somewhere in California that was trying to organize a euthanization clinic, or something like that. There are usually places like lion and tiger farms who would pick up the carcasses for meat, if not, in some places burial is an option. There has to be humane ways to take care of the unwanted horses that are already here. And as a mare owner, my responsibility is not to breed my 2 mares, regardless.
