Re: [haflingerfriends] Why Halflingers?

I had a neighbor who had a Fjord who I worked with on several occasions
and I have been around a few. I can only tell you what I think and what
I saw. I will say that I am Hafligner Bias ha ha. First thing I will
tell you is that Haflingers really don't have health problems as long
as you don't over feed them. I have 8 and none have any feet or health
issues. My neighbors mare dropped dead as a 12 year old for no reason.
The vets couldn't figure it out and she was sick half of her life. She
would go on bit of days in which she would not eat. It was very very
odd I have never seen anything like it. I will say that they are a lot
like Halfingers in temperament they are quiet easy going horses. I also
want to say this about your post. The last thing you put was "compared
to other ponies" well, that is just it you can't compare them to
ponies. Haflingers are not ponies. The only reason they are considered
ponies is because of there height. They move like a horse and they
train like a horse. In my experience with horses and with talking with
other people is that Fjords are more pony like, they will think more
like a pony and train like a pony. I compare Haflingers to Arabs or
Friesians when it comes to there minds and conformation. They are
emotional like an arab and cannot be pushed like say a qh could. I have
never had any problem with any of my horses not being able to keep up.
In fact my gelding has a foot over step and has to slow down. Another
thing is that Haflingers seem to be more consistent than Fjords. I have
seen very level headed Fjords shy/spook for no reason. My neighbors
mare suddenly forgot how to stand still at mounting. I mean literally
forgot, she would spook bolt and shy away from the rider but once you
were on she was fine it was just mounting. I had to do the 2 year old
thing with her for 3 days before she 'remembered'. I have been asked
this question many times Haflingers or Fjords. My main answer is that
Fjords are a bit more pony like and Haflingers are more horse like.

I will never have anything but Haflingers, I trust them completely
though and through. I know that none even the greenest of horses with
spook and bolt off like a cannon ball on fire. They think way to much
for that. I give lessons to a 5 year old off of one of my mares and my
show mare packed around a 10 year old one show season. My gelding who
is the biggest chicken on the planet for a haflinger that is will be
mister invincible when my little brother is on him. They have a heart
and I love them to death. Either way I do wish you the best at finding
the right horse for you. May I dare suggest going to a Fjord group and
asking them the same question? I would certainly be interested in what
they have to say I may learn something.

Subject: [haflingerfriends] Why Halflingers?

I posted this once.. but I don't think I got a response. (I think the
breeding discussion was brought up.) I am looking for a "pony" to
ride. I would like either a Halflinger or Fjord. I am five foot
nothing and have MS. I'm not wheelchair bound at all, I can still walk
on my own. I just need something that is gentle and quiet on the
trails. I really am not looking for a so called "dead head", just one
that is trustworthy. What are the temperaments like with Halflingers?
Are they pushy? Are they slow, not fast enough to keep up with the QH?
Can someone tell my why they chose the Halfy compared to other "ponies"?
Thanks guys
~Cari
