[haflingerfriends] Re: foaling questions...answers...

The advise has been great, Carol. The only thing I did not see was to be sure the new foal can not crawl out of the stall. We put a plywood panel in the only place William could get out. I watched Montis, but he came between midnight and 7 am. He was up, around, nursing, and hard to catch the first few days. Montis was an experienced mom, had 3 foals before him, so I did not worry much. I did bed the large stall with straw when she had bagged up, and just hoped she did not eat the straw. I used shavings or pellets underneath, plus my ground was sandy with no rocks. In your situation with 3 geldings I would keep her separate when I could not see her, at least when she has bagged up or is starting to.
I had other mares foal, one foaled when I was away, and lay down under the rail, my hubby did not know to put a halter on her and get her up. The full grown filly foal was born dead, a very sad thing for the mare.
Be sure your hubby knows what to do in case you are away. Your mare cannot roll under a fence, can she? I later had chain link in my corral fences to keep that from happening. Except for the one spot under her feeder where I wedged plywood.
All should be well, and have your camera ready, they are so cute!
