[haflingerfriends] Another Wonderful Lesson on Charlie

I just have to gush for a moment, as my family has listened to me politely until their eyes glaze over. (after about 15 seconds...) Over the weekend I decided to ride Charlie and get in some practice, but it didn't go well. Every time I put the toe of my boot into the stirrup he stepped away. This does create difficulty because I HAVE to mount from a mounting block, as he's tall and I can't even reach a foot up to a stirrup, which is put up short. I could tell he was not being resistant, but he thought he should yield his hindquarter even though I was very careful not to poke him with my toe. I gave up in frustration and (I admit) was feeling very discouraged and even pouting a little. I talked to the trainer about it on Monday and we really focused on it tonight. He gave me the tools I need to work through the problem, and, next thing you know, I was up on my beautiful boy! Neither Charlie nor I were stressed out using the tools, either. He basically had me "agitate" Charlie when he moved away by poking him in the side with my thumb, and stop agitating him immediately when he stopped his feet....then turn around and walk away, releasing all pressure. He then had me put the toe of my boot into the stirrup, hold for a second, then turn and walk away, then come back and praise. Then....alley oop and I was in the saddle! All of this work and keeping my brain busy meant that I didn't even think of getting any butterflies in the stomach, and Charlie really was settled and listening. We walked and trotted for the rest of the lesson, and the trainer let me work on what I wanted to and gave suggestions as we went. He also said that it's time to move out of my total beginner stage and learn some advanced skills now, and praised my quick release and soft hands as well as my obviously growing confidence. I couldn't be more thrilled. There's just nothing like the feeling of finally riding my own horse, and even though he looks phat and phuzzy compared to those sleek reining horses, he's by far the most beautiful horse on the place!
