Re: [haflingerfriends] Salt

Hi Marilyn - I keep things as simple as possible; yes I use ordinary white licks. I keep both a white salt block and a red mineral block in each of my 2 run in stalls. I notice that they both get used, perhaps the regular white slightly more than the mineral. I have recently also added a yellow selenium block which I notice the feed stores started selling lately; the story is that soil in the southern michigan region is short of this mineral. I'll report back whether that is being used or not. I wasn't aware that you could get loose salt as other readers mentioned; sounds like a great product, especially if a horse is in threat of colic. To me, it doesn't seem like rocket science, if the choice of blocks are available, the horses take what they need. Good luck and give your haffie time to really "tear" into that block!

Have any of you found that your horses don't like mineral blocks? Those who have, will your horse use an ordinary salt lick?

Marilyn
