Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: Haflinger Breeders???

My sentiments exactly, Val! I got a really cheap registered mare out of the field. She was four and unbroke. I wouldn't part with her for the world! She's an awsome trail buddy and the most fun horse I've ever owned. Yes, I took a chance, but like you said, I was willing to put in the time and effort to make my rough-cut diamond sparkle and shine. I just purchased another "cheap" mare last week. Took another chance, we'll see if I get as lucky with her ;-)! OK, are they top quality breeding stock? No. But will I ever be breeding them? No. All that to say that there are people like me out there that are willing to buy the cheaper, maybe not-so-high-quality Haflingers out there and take a chance on them. I just don't have a need for an expensive animal. I won't ever show and I certainly will never breed! I'm all about temperament and I don't think you can put a price tag on that! I don't want to spend a lot in purchase price, but I have plenty to take care of them once I have purchased them. I'm certainly not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers here, I'm just trying to point out that it's not always necessesarily the case that a good horse has to come with a high price tag, sheesh, especially right now in these uncertain times when horses are being sold so far below their true value! My heart does go out to those of you that have been breeding to better the breed and that can no longer find it economically feasible to do that! It's just tragic!!

...But, I do understand what Lene is expressing, here...there are times that I have had the same idea, too, as far as low price=low-end type of horse.
It should definitely be a consideration of each individual horse. It should definitely be a consideration of each individual horse.
I think many people have fallen on hard times, and they just want to find good homes for their Haffies.
I have been very fortunate with low-priced animals that I have purchased turning out to be a "diamond in the rough."
There are folks who can't or don't want to make a large investment as far as initial price for the horse, but who can afford nice living accomodations, good feed, loving care, vet and farrier bills as needed; plus are willing to put their time and effort into training these rough-cut diamonds to make them sparkle and shine.
