Which also means if your horse passes on these "undesireable" traits to the resulting foal it will also have an automatic knock against it in the show ring. Generally, show quality animals are far more valuable than non-show quality animals and in this market I would think that unless a person is producing the foal solely for themselves ( and doesnt care) to be breeding anything but top, top, show quality is a real bad gamble for any kind of profitable re-sell venture.
I agree with the person here that said if you cant sell a started 3 yr old for at least 5K your losing money, and your IMO a hobby breeder not a "business" and I might add if you cant show a profit in a reasonable time frame Uncle Sam will consider you a hobbiest too.
If our Govt only issued breeding permits to people that are paying taxes on the profits they actually make breeding horses, the very root of our overpopulation mess would dry right up, and the horses for once would be the winners.

Hi Kiola,
I should probably explain better what I meant. Sorry. I am new to the
breed, so I've been bugging the AHR to make sure that her paperwork would be
in order. They've cleared up my questions regarding that. Yes, I've read
the standards but to me they are vague in explanation when stated as
'undesirable' . I threw my questions to this group because I know there is
knowledge on here than you cannot get from reading a website's content. I
was hoping to find out what others thought as far as the white markings and
darker hairs in her mane, what they prefer as Haflinger owners in general.
I think my question is getting misconstrued into the idea that she'll be a
broodmare. That is not it. I'm just trying to purchase the best animal that
I can for my money. One that is desirable to me and to the general
Haflinger ownership population.
Haflingers are so far & few between up here that I don't really have an
unbiased opinion to consult and the breed standards stated on the website
just didn't help me out that much. Basically, I don't really care about the
dark mane for my own reasons, BUT if where to breed her I wouldn't want to
contribute (even with one horse) to diluting the standards. I hope you
understand what I'm trying to say - I often cannot put my thinking into
wording in a manner that conveys what I'm really trying to say.
I'm trying to think of all possibilities that her life could take with me.
Just because she is a mare and has a uterus, doesn't mean I'll breed her.
I'm just mulling over all possibilities that could arise in her lifetime
here. Basically, overall I'm just wanting to make sure that I'm being
responsible and purchasing something that is up to breed standards.
Thanks,
Jen
