Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: broken elbow - a valuable lesson

That depends. I took a hoof to my jaw MANY years ago and took no real injury beyond a somewhat bloody cut (I DID see it coming and WAS ducking out of the way - just not quite fast enough). I've also taken a "flying gate" to the bridge of my nose (propelled by double barrelled response of horse to being pushed by said gate) and had nothing more than a cracked nose (never saw a doctor, no obvious displacement, so what point?). I AM somewhat hardheaded (physically) and I agree a helmet is a good thing, but I wouldn't be willing to support your statement as written - the most I would agree to is that a kick to the head "could" be a death sentence - sometimes - if you're unlucky enough to get full force delivered to a "weak" point on your skull (if you're close enough or far enough away, you'll miss the full force - danger point is IIRC about 3 feet behind).

Were you wearing gloves, I hope? And a helmet is a good idea when working with new to you horses. A kick in the head is usually a death sentence. Geri again.
