RE: [haflingerfriends] Probiotics?

Several years ago our weanling Haflinger colt was having problems with epithisitis (spelling?) and our vet had us put him on probiotics to help his gut. He was in pain and didn't show it much outwardly but got severe diarrhea and was just a little off in the way he walked, plus he wouldn't eat for awhile and acted a little colicy. With no grain, probiotics and a little bute he came through just fine but I was sure surprised by the diagnosis and our other vet had no idea after a $200. bill with blood tests. My regular horse vet took one look at him and knew what was wrong, she wasn't available when he first got sick.

Has anyone ever ventured into the territory of probiotics with your horse(s)? If so, did you think it was helpful? How? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much,
