This is probably a totally ignorant question, but from one who studies economics, I can only wonder: is this fact, do you think, what keeps the Fjords more rare and thus more expensive? I agree with Jennifer that there are pros and cons to to the rule and I can't camp out on either side, but I'm just trying to gain some more facts on the subject.

Yes Sylvia that is true. You get your membership taken away for crossbreeding. It has it's pros/cons like everything else does.
