RE: [haflingerfriends] colic

Susan:

So glad Camryns is OK! That was a close one, nice to have a happy ending.

We rescued a pony years ago from a woman that was going through a divorce
and needed to get rid of him quickly. He was just a backyard pony, a
product of her Shetland mare and an Arabian. He was heavie, with a bad
cough and very thin. I wormed him every month for about six months, got his
teeth floated, was given vaccinations, soaked his alfalfa hay and wet down
his grain. He just blossomed into this great looking pony with the sweetest
disposition, cough disappeared and his heaves were under control (no
medication at all). He loved to drive and lived for 32 years.

Hi Gang, Colic can happen so quickly in winter. I have a lot of heated water
buckets and troughs for my horses. I can't believe how much water they have
been drinking this winter. Imagine if, with all the hay they are eating and
not drinking enough water to help pass it through?? Moral of the story is,
make sure you have them watered enough or you will have a lot of colic!!!! I
know there are other reasons but I have noticed a big increase in their
water intake this year? Francine Sugar Creek Haflinger Farm

I have two heated water buckets, one in Camryns stall, the other much larger
in the barn aisle for her when turned out. She's a very big drinker, much
more so than my TWH was. She also has access to free choice minerals which
she really enjoys. She's a bit of a wood chewer and I'm hoping the minerals
will help keep that to a minimum.
Lots of poop in her stall this morning, appears to be rebounding nicely.
Have to say, I was praying as I walked back to the barn this morning and
envisioning her perky face looking over the stall wall. Thank God that's
what I found :)
Vet called this morning to report on the fecal she took to examine. Seems
that while her former owner "said" she was on a regular worming schedule she
has quite a heavy load!!! I'm to wait till late Sun. to worm, just in case
it upsets her tummy so we don't have a weekend ER moment with her er. We'll
do another fecal in two weeks, and worm her again in a month. I'd actually
already picked up some wormer and fortunatly the kind she wants me to use
first go round, as I'd planned to do it this weekend. I wanted to give her
some time to settle in before doing so.
Doc also wants me to change from Triple Crown Lite to Purina Enriched 12 and
feed Ms.Chub as if she were an 800 lb horse. She said since my hay is very
good, that's all she'll need.
