you. I'm not sure if this foal has shed out or not. I see traces of
lighter hair on the lower legs, so I'm thinking this foal has shed out
darker than the foal coat - but she seems too young to be shed out.
There is a wide range of shades of chestnut from very light to very dark
red. In an adult horse, Genetic, Environemental and Nutritional factors
can influence a given shade of chestnut. And there are also genes that can
modify the shade such as the "Smutty" and "Mealy" genes already mentioned.
There can be seasonal changes in coat color with horses shedding out to a
darker color in the spring. And good nutrition tends to darken the coat and
give it shine (and dapples in some cases).
If you check out the reference given before to the stallion Notable on the
Cedar Lane website (cedarlanefarm.com), and scroll through the pictures, you
will see that his coat looks to be a little different shade in every photo.
Some of it is the lighting, but it is also his age, diet and time of year,
and whether he's been clipped or not. There is one photo of him with tall
corn in the background where he looks to be much more golden than dark.
Hope that helps,
Stephanie
