Myself, also - smaller size, strong build (I am 5'8" and no longer have my "girlish figure" -lol!), temperament, and color. My mighty little 14.1H mare is built like a little Quarter horse with her muscling (when we are both in shape - ahem!) and her height makes it possible for me to still mount from the ground (usually) even with me having knees and back that are no longer very strong and pain-free.
Having my Haflinger has made such a difference in my being able to continue to ride, into middle age (I am 52,) and hopefully, beyond!
And, having taken a fall last summer, I can definitely attest to the fact that the ground IS much closer, and even though my landing wasn't totally pain-free,(or graceful,) landing was much easier on my body to take. *chuckle!*
