We only really wash them about 1 time every three months. The rest of the time, we just hose down really well and condition. But even when we wash, we really don't wash. We've started using the conditioner as the shampoo which we do twice. And we rinse it out, than apply a very light conditioner and brush (which we only do MAX once a week).
Also, unless there is something fungal going on (which listerine and Apple Cider Vinegar work great), I use a human version of the Cortizone anti-itch medicine on the hot spots. It's gooey but it really helps to stop the itching. Schnapps Mane is actually growing out after over 2 years of rubbing it out!
In the in between times, I apply normal hand lotion to the dock of the tail about twice a week and this really minimized rubbing and breakage!
