[haflingerfriends] Re: M&B Haffies

Thanks Geri. As far as how I got the excess weight off....and how I have done it. I found Scharly is allergic to alfalfa, orchard grass, oats, barley, and borderline wheat. Before I found out about her allergies, I had been feeding her first a forage hay which had the three kinds of grains (little or no heads) and some good quality straw for more chew time. Then had changed to orchard grass hay. When I reolized she had allergies, I changed her hay to timothy grass. Had it analysised to find out the starch/sugar content along with other things. Wanted to keep it at or under 10%, but it's at 14%. Therefore, I soak and drain her hay and that cuts the sugar down 30%. I also feed her three to four feedings a day, and use a control feeder and small mesh hay nets. This gives her a more natural chewtime as it takes her longer to eat each meal. She started dropping weight within a couple weeks. I do weigh each feeding so I don't overfeed her. Once I start working her harder, I will probably feed more. But lowering the amount of starch has been a good thing for Scharly. Glad you can see the difference. My vet is very happy with this. Feels she can still lose 100#s, but that's the hardest as I feel her pain (I need to lose 10 lbs and it's not happening fast enough).

You can also see the almond trees blossoming in the background. We've been hearing the bees working away, so maybe we'll have a better almond crop this year. So Scharly and Wyatt are cousins. lol
