I have no idea your location or climate, but as a general rule of thumb, it is a good idea to keep the 10 month old filly dewormed. A very good thing. As per feed, good grass, or is your case maybe a flake or two of your 50:50 hay/alfalfa would be great. Grain is not a requirement, but a good mineral source is. We use 12:12 mineral. It is the best on the market I believe, palatable, good mineral and vitamin content, and more. It is not cheap, but it does the trick! I feed our yearlings good grass, keep them in 12:12 mineral (loose or blocks are good, they do not have a high suagar content like some of the cheaper mineral blocks), salt, good fresh water and keep them dewormed and they do fine. They get pasture time in the late summer, but our winter pasture is not much, though they are out on it, we feed them as well. I beleive that the basics are very important, and over feeding the youngster with too much protein, ect, can cause more damage then its worth! In severe weather here, we may add oats and extra hay, but I do not believe in sweat feeds at all. Seen a lot of damage from sweat feeds.. a good solid ration of hay, and a well thought out plan for deworming, dental, ect...is what all horses need. Many times people overfeed to make themselves feel good, the horses need a fairly basic ration and they mature, grow, and develope on their own time correctly! Good luck. Thats my two cents worth...
Sincerely,
Dawn

I used to use a Nutrena Youth feed, but since I've learned more about the pelleted feeds I'm not that excited about using it again. For my mature (under-worked at the moment) geldings I'm using clean, rolled oats and would like to find an option other than pelleted for the filly also to supplement her grass hay.
