[haflingerfriends] OT/ Re: Horse Olympics/Dressage

Very well said, Kiola!
The very thought of this abuse makes my stomach turn. I heard about it a year ago.

Rollkur is a "training" (and I use that term very loosely) technique used by a small minority of dressage riders in order to fake the appearance of having a horse collected and on the bit, also trying to fake the appearance of being round.
> Many Classical dressage riders, as well as many who know abuse when they see it are outraged over the practice of some riders/trainers who employ this method, and call it dressage training. There has been public outcry after the "blue tongue" video first was released and there are large groups of people who are trying to see to it that this practice is no longer ignored and allowed.
> The article you gave reference to gives a pretty good explanation of it all. If you want to learn more about it, there is a really great book out there about it that I am reading myself right now. It is called: "Tug of War: Classical Versus "Modern" Dressage: Why Classical Training Works and How Incorrect Riding Negatively Affects Horses' Health" by Dr. Gerd Heuschmann. Not only does he give a great explanation of the problems with Rollkur, there are really nice photos and illustrations in there showing exactly what is going on with the horse biomechanically.
> I guess I did feel I needed to say a little about it, as there are many Haflinger friends who enjoy Dressage with their Haflingers. I worry that some who are not familiar with Dressage would automatically assume that the Rollkur method is commonly used by those who ride Dressage. It is NOT. The Rollkur method is frowned upon by the Classical Dressage riders.

I watched the video and do not know enough about dressage, but it does seem to me the horse is being worked with lack of oxygen due to compression of the trachea and quite possibly nerve and blood flow compromised. It is so behind the bit and not allowed free flowing relaxed movement. Since someone made the point to video this, there must be a concern????
