Now on a totally different idea, i would actually look at Hawaii. Perhaps too far and too expensive, but if you go to the big island, they have lots of horseback riding in Waimea. The Parker Ranch is located in Waimea (there are a few Waimea's in Hawaii so it is also known as Kamuela). You can go from the beach to side of volcano in about 40 minutes, and the tempurature can drop 20 degrees. It is amazing. The area does seem to have a constant wind, but i think Waimea was one of my favorite places on the big island.
And of course there is tons of fishing in hawaii, but you have to find the right places. They either have fishing pools (created long ago by the first Hawaiins, and there is also plenty of sea fishing. Many hotels will send you out to catch a fish, then you bring it back and they will clean and cook it for you.

Hi- I am trying to plan a once in a lifetime vacation for my DH and myself in 2010. Hoping for some good ideas from you folks!
We would like to combine his love of fishing and my wish to do some trail riding somewhere outside of New England, like Rocky Mtn states or Great Lakes areas. Unfortunately he has no interest in riding, so his fishing would not be from horseback camping. So I need to find someplace where he can fish (stream and/or lake), and I can ride. Could be from a day or two to as long as a week. It would be even more perfect if the riding involved Haflingers!
Not sure if we would be flying and renting a vehicle or driving the entire trip. We are pretty adaptable and flexible, and are just trying to brainstorm early.....might not happen until next fall.
Please email me with any ideas or suggestions! What's your area like, and do you know of any place that would accomodate us??
