Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: Saddles that fit....Halfingers/any horse for that matter: Specialized Saddles

To me the original email looks a little too much like a sales pitch. The english saddle is not english enough, looks very western. In my area of Maryland, i would check out County Saddlery first if i wanted a custom fit saddle.

By the way, i dont own, nor work for County. But they are known for quality in Maryland.

Not to be negative here, but I had to sell my custom made Specialized Saddle because the tree was too wide for my horse. The owner, Dave, insisted after just looking at my Haflinger from a distance that he needed a draft tree, and he did not (I didn't know that at the time, of course). It was unstable and it made white marks all over Calvin's back and withers. Calvin is not a typical drafty Haflinger. He's narrow at the shoulders and wider at the barrel, kind of pear shaped. Anyway, the local distributor of Specialized Saddles is a friend of mine and boards her horse near me, and we tried everything, but we couldn't make it work. So I don't mean to be critical of them, but they aren't for every horse. Their workamship leaves a lot to be desired at times, too, and they aren't cheap price wise.

Hello, I've posted once on this site, but wanted to do again so as to pass on what I've tested to be THE very best saddle fit system out there. Not my personal opinion, but from hundreds of Pressure Map scans of some of the very best "other" lines and the weight distribution is huge, and psi is very low, and this is all due to the fact that these saddles are "shimmable". Created for the endurance crowd by a Tevis rider (riders who clock over 4K miles in a year, not 400), they are leather, light, short, and ergonomically correct as well as able to be fitted to every horse (s). Virtuallly the last saddle you'll ever have to buy. I live in Star, NC and travel throughout the eastern US. Shelby Friml
