RE: [haflingerfriends] Re: thanks for the ideas on barn sour

>> I have always been told if you are going to use a crop, use it
effectively. <snip> A person should only have to use it once or twice to get
a response... we are not talking about beating horses.

Good point. All of my horses know what a crop is...but at our barn we call
it a "motivational device" <g>. All I need to do is show it to the horse,
or have the rider hold it and the horse does what it is being asked to do.
They have never been beaten with a crop, but it has been used effectively.

>> I am mostly worried about those out there who read some poorly thought
out (or not thought out at all) training advice and will try it out. I worry
for their horses. I worry for their safety. I worry for their lives... and
so I am speaking out against those methods.

I think this was Peggy's concern also. I don't often respond to posts -
unless I catch them first thing in the morning- because I'm in the barn most
of the day and by evening the post has either been answered or I'm too tired
to think and write effectively. But I do read most posts on this board.
Some of the suggestions make sense others sound like a recipe for disaster -
but the same holds true for other "training" options. I have watched some
videos on YouTube of persons who have name recognition as being a trainer -
and I shudder at what I see.
