[haflingerfriends] Hauling driving vehicles.

Thought I might pitch in on this one cause I have a short bed truck and thought I would be limited in what I could haul. I have a 2 horse slant trailer with a pointed nose. Let me list the things I have done for my various vehicles:

*first get a winch to mount behind the cab of the truck on the floor. Get one with a remote control or long cord so you can stand out of the way when winching. Mine is rated for 2K pounds.

* put slots just inside the wheels that the winch hooks can pull the vehicle up from and have that rope meet in another hook just under the vehicle so the vehicle goes in straight.

*get a "headache bar"to put on the front of the truck bed and then you never have to worry about scratches to the truck cab and it will give you lots of spots for securing the shafts/pole. It also protects you from your vehicle joining you in the cab if, God forbid, you have an accident.

*I get lots of those things you put on seat belts made out of "wool" to cushion the vehicle at every spot a bungie/or stronger tie hits the vehicle to prevent scratches.

*go to a trailer place..on web too...that sells things for atv, moto equip. and get 2 ramps made of aluminum(so they can be carried) to get the vehicle in the back with the winch. Then put the ramps in the trailer storage spot or put them under the vehicle in the truck bed.

* there is also a web trailer place that sells extenders for the truck bed. It fastens on the back of your bed door and extends the bed by that much. So it can be on when you need more room ...I use it for hauling hay and for vehicles needing that much space.

*for the "Big Kahuna" ie. the 2 seated surrey, I had a welding place manuf. a frame to put in the back of the bed. The frame has a little ramp to get the surrey up over the wheel well and the whole surrey rides high on the frame and it all is with a short bed truck and there is no problem turning with my trailer.

*with the bed extender and the surrey frame we had to get a hitch extender from of course, the web trailer site ;-)

Don't want to get into too much detail for you but this will give a hint about all the adaptations you can do in a short bed truck. My husband cannot help anymore and I have lots of physical limitations so we go for thinking up what will make the event as easy as possible without having to buy new truck or trailer...though I do lust after a larger trailer and one with a larger area that could be more comfortable to change in than the storage space my 2 horse slant gives me.
