Tonight when I went out to feed my animals and put the horses in their stalls, my decision to buy a Haflinger was reaffirmed yet again.
I have a 26 year old Appaloosa mare, have had her since she was a yearling, trained her, showed her, trail rode her and finally retired her. She is and always has been a high speed horse, she is always with her head up snorting at something. Don't get me wrong, she is a lovely mare but she can wear you out...
Then there is Guthrie, my dear little almost two year old gelding, who is king of the paddock, no pushover he!
The horses were in the far end of the paddock when I went out to gather them up and tuck them away for the evening. The mare came flying up, eyes big, nickering, dinner, dinner...Guthrie came meandering up, walked up to me and presented his sweet little head for a scratch and a press his face into my belly contact. He stood calmly and let me snuggle a bit in his fluffy copper fur, seemingly content to stand there as long as I was willing to pet him.
I got his mane behind his ear and lead him to his stall's paddock and sent him into his house for dinner, he paused and wanted just a bit more contact, then he walked into his stall...
The mare was wagging her head, impatient for dinner. I went to open her paddock gate and she crashed into the partially opened gate, making a huge crash and then jumped back snorting and pawing..impatient bad mannered mare tonight... I made her back up and wait, then opened the gate and let her in to dinner. Ungrateful wretch didn't give me a second glance..dinner dinner dinner....
This old girl was a great ride, don't get me wrong, but I have found that in my older age I love the calm, no drama fur ball way more than the high speed mare...
I wish I could find a loving teenage girl that would like a old well trained mare that has lots of miles in her so I could get me an old well trained Haflinger to drive!
Hug your furballs and have a great evening
Lee
