Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: lubrisyn

Tami,

I would say there is no true method to make sure what you are feeding it what you get. From the formulation being off, to the company running out of one source of a mineral and switching to another, or if prices on minerals change they may either look for a cheaper (and possibly lower quality) source. I often look for chelated minerals, as these are a little more expensive and show some attempt at trying to have a better product on the part of the manufacturer. However as i understand it, some minerals are better in a chelated state while others are not.

I attempt to buy products with the NASC seal on it. Not that i think that is if something has the seal then it must be good, but it makes me feel a little better, like the company actually cares and is willing to be scrutinized by someone else.

I also mostly stick to buying my stuff from either SmartPak or Valley Vet. I like both sites because their prices are pretty good, and if one does not carry the product, another will. I also like them because they have reviews on their site. I have often read reviews and based a purchase off of reviews.

Also, a good deal is packaging and just downright seeing what works. I also put a lot of credit into something that smells good and i would actually think of eating. Granted i don't think Remission smells that great, but i do see a difference from when my horse is on it or not on it. Also, the cost is so low on the product, i just stick with it. Biotin Plus smells great. It has spices like cinnamon and cloves. Cinnamon is being show to help horses that are insulin resistant. The 5ha or 5in1 has an alfalfa smell to it. I also use mare magic (although trying a lesser expensive Mystic Mare this time) which is ground up raspberry leaves which also has a grassy, raspberry smell to it.

I am sure someone else will say that everything i have said her is wrong. Take it for what it is worth. Even if you read the bag of food, they will often tell you the guaranteed min and sometimes max of various minerals, however the actual amount can vary from the guaranteed max and min. Same thing can happen to supplements. Before they even get mixed/formed, the ingredients are aging and losing their effectiveness. As they sit in their package on the shelf, they age. That is where packaging comes in. Farrier's Formula (which in my personal experience i have found it helps to put some weight on the old horses, yet also helps fat horses to lose weight) is packaged in nitrogen to slow the aging process.

Good luck,
Alana

Alana,

How do we know which companies to trust that what they claim to be in their
supplements, truly are? I looked up the med vet 5-in- 1 H/A and as you said,
it looks like about everything we need is in it.

I'm trying to find a supplement that also has something in it to help my
senior to gain weight. I', hoping to find it all in one.

My vet said that anything made by Nutramax can be trusted as they test their
products constantly.

Right now I am feeding Purina Senior, forceflex gluc/chond/msm, and moorglo.
I want to at least add HA (Lubsrisyn).

Thanks so much for the info. And no - it wasn't too much info.

Hugs!

Tami
