Re: [haflingerfriends] genetic question

If you're looking to buy a youngster (weanling-two) as a replacement, I would tend to look at what the older (in work) get from the stallion and mare(s) are doing relative to what you want to do, as well as the conformation, temperament and balance of the specific youngster you're interested in. If you're looking to breed for a replacement, you'd want to look at what the stallion is producing when bred to horses of similar type and breeding as the mare you're thinking of breeding and how his older offspring are "performing" (in the show ring or on the trails - according to what you want to do with the baby when it's "grown up"), as well as the conformation and temperament of both the stallion and mare (most predictable outcome if they are of similar "type" with no "matching" flaws). The "safest" alternative is to buy a young but mature horse that is already "successful" at whatever it is you want to do (this requires the most "up front" money generally,
though)

Subject: [haflingerfriends] genetic question

Let me rephrase...if I am to get a replacement, how would I know how to answer all those questions I stated before for predicting the get of a certain stallion? Or is there no system? then should you ask the breeder what their goals are for the current generation? And those with stallions...what kind of goals do you have for the mares you breed to, especially outside ones? With most of us stuck inside with the weather I must admit I expected more of a discussion, especially from those known for breeding. Like the long timers on this site asking why we do not discuss genetics more often....then the answer is to just get a replacement? We still need to understand genetics if we are getting a replacement. Or do we only look at fully trained 5 yr. olds?
