I have an aggressive gelding also, and he tends to charge my other gelding, whose name is Cappy, ironically, whenever people are around. When they are by themselves in the pasture they are fine together....Cappy knows Nashville is head honcho and shows him respect, accordingly. But Nashville's behavior bothered me that I could not approach Cappy without him trying to run him off....not to mention it is dangerous for me if I get caught in the cross fire. So, I began to start running Nashville off...away from me...until he got the idea that I was boss mare every time I set foot in the pasture. That means he must stand and watch patiently if I want to go up and pet Cappy without his interference. I had planned on carrying a crop with me each time I entered the pasture, but believe it or not, Nashville has only needed me to scold him strongly with my voice, back him up away from me and Cappy a couple of times, and now he stands, rather forlornly, for me to
finish with Cappy and turn to him and give him praise and attention.
I do not know if jealousy is a factor with your gelding, but it certainly was with mine. Nashville was my first Haflinger and he felt that I was HIS human. What I had to do was to convince him that, actually, he is MY horse....but so is Cappy, and I get to call the shots!
If your horses get along okay when you are not out there, then it might be a jealousy issue and he views you as HIS. Try being firm with him whenever you are around him and remind him who it is that pays the feed bills! There are some really good trainers on this forum and they can probably give you more detailed suggestions than I can, but just reminding Nashville that I was "queen bee" seemed to do the trick for us. Good luck, and stay safe!

Subject: [haflingerfriends] Can't we all just get along?!
Our seven year old haffie gelding, Cappie, has started charging our fell pony gelding, Laddie. He has always been top man with our other horses but, recently, he seems to have focused most of his aggression toward Laddie. For example, Cappie will bolt from his lead to charge at poor Laddie. We do not know when he was gelded but we bought him as a 4 yo gelding.
We would like to do trails together but with this huge issue, that idea is out of the question.
Please share suggestions or similar experiences.
Thank you,
Happy Horse
