[haflingerfriends] Re: Tails you're it!

Hi Cherie, First, I'm no expert! <G> Perhaps you are referring to Mrs. Stewart's Blueing which gets mixed with Orvis Shampoo--you may need to experiment with correct proportions for your situation.

Where I live my Haflingers need their tails to swish flies in warm weather and in cold weather we get so much rain the bag would be a wet, muddy lump at all times! I don't trim anything on a Haflinger tail--it's lovely a la natural.

What I like to do is: the day or evening before taking my Haflinger off the farm, I wash the tail with a shampoo (Mane and Tail usually), apply Quick Silver (leaving on per bottle directions), rinse, condition (Mane and Tail conditioner), carefully comb out, braid (rubber band at end), and place in a tail bag.

The next day when I unbraid and brush out the tail, it is shimmering and lovely. Perhaps it would be even whiter via another method, but quite adequate for my purposes and I enjoy the compliments.

Also, I've applied baby oil just before applying conditioner when the tail feels especially dry. Some Haflinger folks have complained of the "oily feel" but for me (perhaps I don't use too much), the shine and conditioning of an oil outweigh any slight feel of oiliness. Some folks do complain of oil attracting dirt, but my Haflingers attract so much dirt anyway that concern is the very least of my worries! lol Judy in NE TN
