[haflingerfriends] Re: Tails you're it!

Cherie

I can say from experience that tail bags are never a waste of money if put on correctly. ALL of my haflingers wear tail bags. it is a pet peeve of mine to have a horse with a white tail, especially mares, that have yellow tails. yuck. Tail bags are so EASY! just wash the tail with cowboy magic yellow out, quick silver or some blueing shampoo, put some conditioner in and the spray with laser sheen or vetrolin shine to get started, braid and put in bag. Then in 2 weeks or so, brush tail out, spray with detangler, rebraid, put back in bag. I wash them every other month or so and the bag keeps them clean, and after some time the yellow completly goes out. My two mares tails drag the ground with I take them out, and my 2yr old stud colts tail is also almost to the ground now after putting it in a tail bag a month ago. Makes grooming way easier. Just food for thought.

Fly masks are easier for the horse to get off but not so for the tail bag. Give it a try. You can see my one mares tail if you watch us haflinger folks in the Rose parade! I'll have her tail out, it drags on the ground a few inches. Been in a tail bag for pretty much 5 years. I take it out when I want to 'show it off' or in parades and such, otherwise just stays protected in a bag. Good luck.

So first, I have heard using Mrs. Whatshername's Bluing is good for making the tail white. Really? Won't that irritate the dock and how exactly would one do that? I assume you mix it with water but does anyone know the ratio? Secondly, I see some hunters with the tail trimmed around the base of the tail. it looks very comely but won't that reduce your tail volume and won't it grow out kind of weird? Is there any functional reason to do this? Third, I get really bummed when I see the top hairs broken off but assume there is little I can do to prevent him rubbing his rump on whatever is handy (and he is wormed regularly so I am guessing that it's just a fun habit of his, not a medical indication of some kind). Anyone care to disagree? Since he won't keep a fly mask on I assume a tailbag would also be a waste of money.
