This is what I've seen at CDEs we've been to. Either honkin' huge trailers with LG or 16-20' stock trailers.
We also have a short cab truck due to our Super Crew cab so GN is out for us. We put a cap on the truck and can carry hay & gear back there.
What they do is load the carts, atvs first, close the center gate, then load the horses. The shafts rest on the top of the center gate, out of the horse's way. Tack goes up front with the carts.
By doing it this way, they have instant access to the horses in case of an accident. They don't have to unload when returning home if it's late & they don't want to. They can load the trailer the day prior then just load the horses when ready to go.
I have an estimate on a new trailerand the mfg. assures me it is safe to haul horses in the back and the carts, etc. up front. After all, when have you ever seen a LQ trailer with the LQ behind the horses?
Just a thought.
The trailer we designed is an 18' stock trailer with the front half enclosed. I need cart storage, so that will keep the rain out. I'm getting a big bus window in the front driver's side so we'll have light if we decide to use the front half for an overnighter. It'll be clean because only the cart(s) were hauled there.
