[haflingerfriends] Re: Genetic Definitions, part six: Environmental Factors

Now before I start in again here, I just want you folks to know that these last few sections on certain genes and factors effecting them are not something you have to read in direct order, or perfect in your mind before you can read the next peice. You can skip around a bit if something bores you. However, I plan on getting into some of the heredity thoughts a bit more intensly- so it may be wise to understand the very core of that before stepping into something more intense so you do not get confused.
Ok- here we go...
"The surrounding conditions that influence the growth and development of an individual are known as the environment. Both external factors (such as living conditions) and internal factors (ex: hormones) are part of the environment. The environment is capable of drastically changing the phenotype of an individual. For ex: A foal with the genotype for straight legs recieves a nutritionally imbalanced diet and developed crooked legs. In this case, early detection and correction of the foals diet (environment) may cure the problem. Alternately, a foal with a genotype for crooked legs will not develope straight legs even with a sound diet!"
Next: We will back up a bit with chromosomes, as I have personally recieved an email about equine chromosomes. Good addition!
