> > What are some of the simple exercises I can do in a limited area that will build trust and rapport between us. Just so that you know - while I have not trained horses, I am a retired agility and obedience dog trainer. I tend to be a "positive trainer" but I also realize that I'm not dealing with a 50 lb dog.

But, until then I really would like to have established a solid working relationship with this horse. Any suggestions or shared experiences would be appreciated.

Hi Susanna, My suggestion is to work her in a round pen--that's where you'll establish yourself as the leader and equines follow a good leader. Winter can be difficult if you do not have a covered round pen with sand floor. I do not have one so I wait for better weather and safer footing. Each spring I do round pen work for at least a full week (sometimes two) before I resume riding. It keeps the horse sane and me safe; they can get mighty frisky on spring grass! If a round pen is not available, then any flat area for longeing with side reins adjusted so the horse can get his/her nose in front of the vertical can be very useful (gives the horse the feeling of containment so you can maintain control).
Additional resources: Monty Roberts is excellent for round pen work. Side rein work is discussed in many dressage books (your library may have these). Also, John Lyons book, "Bringing Up Baby" may have some simple exercises you can do in a limited area. With time and patience you WILL have a well-trained mare you can trust! While somewhat different, dog training is useful! :) Judy in NE TN
