RE: [haflingerfriends] Laminitis

Hi Molly,

I am dealing with that exact thing with Naverre. I've had horses for many
years & have never had to deal with a laminitic horse. He has had one bout
with it also, which showed up as an abscess. Again, had never had an
abscess either. For him one foot is worse than the other, but I've been
dealing with a lame horse for over 6 months. I'm not knowledgeable about
laminitis or founder (his bone has not rotated - thank goodness) but I would
HIGHLY recommend not purchasing a horse that is known to have had issues
with laminitis. That said, would I ever get rid of Naverre - no way on this
green earth.

We really don't know what we are in for in the future with him but he will
not be able to be turned out with the others. He will only be allowed out
when the grass is dry (so back to his dry lotted paddock or stall each
evening before dew & there until the dew has dried the next day. The
supplements he is on are very expensive in my opinion. I was told to have
him trimmed every 4 weeks instead of our normal eight & he is trimmed short.
The farrier says that only time will tell. Right now we are on our 3rd trim
with him & you can see the dark spots that are growing out where the blood
spots where the blood flow has died in the hoof.

I'm positive there will be someone else to help you (us) out with better
knowledge than I as I've never dealt with it and am in the learning process
now. I just know that my riding future with him is most likely gone and its
heartbreaking to me.

I've withheld posting about it on here as I didn't want to hear the harsh
side of laminitis but am trying to be positive and look at this all with a
positive attitude and move forward. It's here - now how do we make the best
of it. If you did pursuing getting this mare I would make the owners have
her X-rayed to make sure that her bone hasn't rotated.

As far as the supplements I have him on LamineX which is $108.95 for 28 days
during the loading dose. He hates it - it's a pain in the butt to get him
to eat it. I have a sample of SmartSox on its way here now to see if
that'll be any better as far as palatability for him. It's about $49.95 for
a 28 day supply so its easier on the pocket book.

Good luck & please share any info you find on it.

Jen & Naverre & Nikkado

Anyone care to educate me on the finer points of Laminitis? I know the
basics of what causes it and what it is and how to (hopefully) prevent it.
It seems to me that I have read that once a horse has had a bout of it, it's
more likely to recur? Is this true? I'd love ot hear some of your
experiences.......

No, it's not Moxie. It's a 7 year-old Haflinger mare that I am considering.
They tell me that she had one episode of it last spring and are saying it
was probably the grass. Should I turn tail and run or is it worth checking
her out anyway? Is there anything more specific that I should ask or does it
even matter?

Thanks so much, in advance!!
Molly in Ohio who really needs another Haffie!
