[haflingerfriends] Re: Early foals

We use straw for bedding, once the mare starts showing the signs she is ready to foal, we also have a heat lamp above in each foaling stall, just in case we miss the foaling and to keep the chill off a wet, newborn foal. With the heat lamp on, we can also use the cameras without having to have other lights on in the barn, making the mares much more content! We keep shavings below the straw so it absorbs and is easy to clean out, but lots of straw on top. After 4 or 5 days, we stop using the straw, but keep the heat lamp on.
Good luck!

My husband suggested I bed them down when it's time in 14 inches of corn stock bedding. Cattle ranchers and lots of swine farmer's use it for bedding. Is it safe for haflingers or should I stick to straw and wood chips?
