Subject: [haflingerfriends] The Storm
Our usually quiet farm suffered the battering of an unexpected storm today.
We awakened this morning to a snowfall so thick and heavy we could barely
make our way to the barn to feed and turn out the Haflingers. Their low
nickers of greeting welcomed us when they spied their buckets and hay-filled
bags. We hung their freshly filled hay nets around the barn area making sure
they had the choice of eating with or without shelter.
The plentiful cardinals, robins, woodpeckers, and wrens of yesterday were no
where in sight as we replenished their feeders. With icy coldness swirling
all about us we made our way back to the warmth of the house where one yippy
Corgi wanted his turn at making yellow snow.
Throughout the morning the storm blew and raged, wreaking havoc on anything
not firmly secured and tossing tree limbs as if they were matchsticks. All
pine trees were bent low from the weight of snow on branches as their
shallow roots clung tenaciously to patches of earth. Then, ever so slowly,
the winds died down and the snowflakes gradually turned to warm rain,
completely melting the snow. Once abated, the storm left in its wake a
plethora of unwanted debris strewn about the whole place.
The Haflingers have not run or played during today's inclement weather. They
simply hunkered down to withstand the sudden onslaught of extremely foul
conditions. They did not complain. They needed no special coddling. Within
their gentle nature they calmly withstand the unpleasantness of an unwelcome
storm. Contentedly, they munched their hay knowing the hand that oversees
the turbulent storms of life is the same hand that provides the eventual
warmth of sunny days. Perhaps they have hope; perhaps they truly understand
peace.
