dog treats - the bone shaped biscuits in the puppy size (1-inch x 1/2-inch).
The brand I buy is "Happy Hound" and they cost $4.99 for 4 pounds. A bag
contains about 650 pieces. No, I didn't count them all. I weighed 50 and
factored up...
For those that want to know, the analysis says 23% protein and 9.5% fat.
But no sugar added, which is what most horse treats are made of. There are
approximately 10 biscuits per ounce. I don't give 10 biscuits day, but even
if I did - it's still not very much compared to a horse's weight and the
rest of their diet.
My 3 horses love the biscuits - and look for them like candy. They are a
real treat to them. When I got my Haflinger, she would not eat them. After
two weeks of putting them in her grain and stuffing them in her mouth only
to have her spit them out, I tried a different approach. I got an apple and
took a big bite and fed it to her with a biscuit. Gradually, I reduced the
size of the bite of apple until all she got was the biscuit. It only took
one apple and now she is hooked on the biscuits.
I like the biscuits because of their size and hardness. You can put a
handful in your pocket and they will not crumble. In fact, they will even
survive the washer and dryer! I also have a dog, and she competes with the
horses for treats. When I ride I usually have biscuits in my pocket just in
case I run into a dog that may need a distraction. And, if you are using
treats as motivation they are easy to break in half and you have twice as
many.
