Re: [haflingerfriends] Battle with Leukemia

As I sit here, tears rolling down my face, I'm speechless. Yet at the same time, I feel I want to respond in some way. I am SO SORRY both for what Natale endured emotionally and physically and for the pain that you, her family and friends, are left to deal with. You will all be in my thoughts and prayers! I hope you are all comforted somewhat by the fact that she did get her last wish and didn't have to leave this earth from a hospital room. Thank you for sharing your burden with us.

Subject: [haflingerfriends] Battle with Leukemia

Many of you know that my stepdaughter, Natale, has been battling Leukemia since mid October and have contacted me off list to offer support and encouragement, thank you for your kindness. She was young, strong and healthy and one day, out of the blue, that all changed. This has been a parents worst nightmare.

I am heartbroken to say that three weeks ago today Natale passed away. After the third round of chemo failed, Shands hospital told her there was really no hope, so Natale decided to come home. She tried one more round of an experimental chemo treatment while she was at home and when that failed we called hospice.

Natale was very clear that she wanted to be home with her family and not die in a 10x10 hospital room, and Hospice made that possible for us. She got to spend time at home with her five year old son and had us keep a fire roaring in the fireplace from morning till night every day. She loved the first sip of a freshly open and ice cold diet coke so we opened a new one for her whenever she was thirsty and she loved eating only the marshmallows from the Lucky Charms cereal. She had her entire family with her through all. She died in the most graceful and gentle way imaginable, with her family surrounding her. I will be forever grateful that god showed mercy in her final days and Hospice was able to get and keep her pain under control.

Natale was only 25 years old, but brave and strong well beyond her years. She did everything she could, every treatment and procedure they had, in order to live. She braved pain that was beyond imagining. She was the most courageous person I have ever known.

We will never understand why.....and even though we know the living must go on living, we are just so grieved it feels like we cannot get through this.

Go home and kiss your kids cause life can change in a minute.

Thank you again for all your kindness.

Lee
