[haflingerfriends] Re: Superpony!

Hi Sharon,

Thank you, he is getting pretty good at using his body correctly for jumping. It takes time and conditioning and patience, but these little guys can jump! He is 14 hands and Lauren rides him in a G. Passier & Sons, 17" W, "Paxton" All purpose saddle. I found it at our tack store on consignment for a really reasonable price. I think with tack, it is important to buy the best quality you can and maintain it.
I know how it is to have people say disparaging things about our Haflingers. A Pony Club big wig once told us that he would be happier plowing feilds for a farmer or going for trail rides in the Alps. So I guess that is even more reason to stick to it and show folks what he really can do!
There is also the other end of the spectrum too, and I have had far more positive comments about him than negative. I tend to like to focus on that instead. I know that he keeps my daughter safe, and I know that she loves him. People who see them together can see that relationship.
At her last lesson, the trainers dog had bolted out into the arena and was right between two jumps (set up for a bounce, not a lot of room between) that they were heading for. Lauren had no time to react as they were cantering, he hopped the first jump, came down between the jumps crooked avoiding squashing the dog, then he geared down over the next jump pretty quickly and Lauren in slow motion came forward on him and slowly slid off after they cleared the second jump. Lucky just stood there (did not run off) as Lauren sat on in the sand. She was ok, and so happy her pony handled it so well. I went over and gave him a big hug and thanked him for not squishing the dog and taking care of his girl.

Lauren and Lucky have been working on jumping over the past year with Carrie Hopper. Lucky has now dubbed the name of "Superpony" as he looks like he is flying like Superman when he jumps... instead of a cape, there is the flowing mane. They are now schooling at 2'9" and are hoping to pass the D3 rating for Pony Club in early June.
