Subject: [haflingerfriends] registered height

Thought I might throw another thing into the registry debate. In the last Equis magazine they compared the ideal height for a riding/driving horse and that is not over 15HH and 1300 lbs. Above that the bone tendon ratio does not work as efficiently and there will be more of a tendency for leg, hoof and tendon problems. Our standard says the top is 15HH unless the horse is exceptional and yet we see studs advertized as registered who state they are over 15HH and they have not been rated as gold. Who decides these horses are so exceptional that they should be used for breeding? If we are talking about the registry being pure...and all 3 of my Haflingers are registered....lets see the standards be applied purely. Any Haflinger stud over 15HH should not get a breeding certificate unless it has passed inspection and gone gold. I see the "fad" to be taller and taller horses which also in some ways also equates to a hotter temperment and very light color and lighter in bone and refined heads...in fact some of the horses seem to have a huge amt. of mealey gene as well as light color. When does a horse no longer qualify as chestnut? when is there so little contrast between the body color and the mane and tail that the spectacular trait of the Haflinger coloring is moot?
I agree that there is little on the West Coast for Haflingers from the AHR and yet California and Western Haflingers have many members. Wonder how many of them are members of AHR? They obviously want to be involved with the Haflinger breed and promotion and pay dues to these organizations. We have lots of Haflingers out here..why not more or any AHR activities? I know there is support for Equestrian Affair or whatever it is called in S.Ca. but when we asked for support for the Rose Parade that is seen in 220 countries and huge numbers in the U. S. we got less than a third of the money donated to one horse show...Emily stated that for 8 hrs. after the Parade the Haflinger web site visits went up 150%. It took me a year of work to organize and get us all into the Parade and I for one had to pitch in over $5K of my own funds. It was my contribution to the breed, but we got an equal amount of financial support from California Haflingers and Western Haflingers as the national registry. My effort does not come close to what Emily does for the breed with her web site and Haflingerfriends but the locals gave us equal support as the national...and that makes one think about what the national really offers West Coasters. Don't worry, I already sent my money in Emily. Victoria da Roza
