Re: [haflingerfriends] Re: Saddle Fit

Treeless saddles don't "distribute" weight over as large an area as (well-fitting) treed saddles (in general; there may be exceptions). Appropriate padding for a treeless saddle can help, but 200 pounds (or more) pushing down "only" over the area of the seat bones can cause problems for the horse. There are riders over 200 pound successfully using treeless saddles (riders who have learned to distribute their weight over a larger portion of their body where it interfaces with the horse/saddle? - thighs?, riders with excellent balance that ride "actively rather than like a passive lump - which can be a problem in treeless even with "smaller" riders). It also depends on how you are "built" and what size seat you need (which can be a problem in treed saddles as well). If you need a large seat size, the saddle will be longer than average and this can be a problem - especially if the horse has a shorter back. It's a rule of thumb rather than a "law engraved in
granite".

The only thing is, it is not recommended for heavier riders (over 200#). I'm not sure why, and it bugs me. (I don't like things or people that discriminate against heavier riders)
